Well damn! That's frickin' trashed!
Well damn! That's frickin' trashed!
That is the before picture... I put it in the garage and covered it over with a towel. The next day when I could deal with it I pulled off junk parts and tried turning flywheel by hand and it stuck and I thought that is the end of the 440... My friend of 14 years. Then I noticed a bent fin on flywheel was hitting on cylinder (did not scratch or mark cylinder) so I bent the fin and then it spun nicely....I remembered seeing the Farmertec 440 kit and thought there is hope. Accident pulled the impulse line off and had stalled saw...poor intake boot was stretched about 6". All better now. Gotta put my other dawg on and b& c. That was a 32" bar I had on...usually run 20" Stihl. Farmertec kit sure made it look better but it still has its Stihl heart. Now I am going to order it a Magnum sticker like I promised myself if it started up after working on it. Started right up.
That is the before picture. Up and running and looking new. I posted pics in thread. All Stihl under the plastic.Well damn! That's frickin' trashed!
Ooh man on a 500i......ouch! OUCH!Too bad they don't make a handle yet for the 500i. Dad's neighbor dropped a tree on his haha
I have yet to drop a tree or damage a saw on accident. I did intentionally use a small Husqvarna as a wheel chock for a bucket truck. When my 044 got pinched by a tree, there were no AM parts. All the saw shops told me it was not worth fixing.
That is when I started working on chainsaws. The OEM tank holder cost me $160, and that was a long time ago.
I unbent my top handle to reuse it!
During the process, I did a BGD, timing advance, dp muffler cover, and a steel screen air filter (winter filter). She runs as strong as a lot of ported saws w/o any real port work.
I unbent my top handle and switched the Farmertec off it. I would have put the DP muffler on but I got one neighbor out here in the country to worry about. Sounds like we are both alike...very happy to have a AM kit available. I bought my kit US stock and it got here in 2 days. I just got done cutting up some firewood. Ordered a Magnum sticker and am going to replace my gas vent. I run the saw every 2 or 3 days all Fall and Winter long. Should have bought the Artic Version but more than happy with my saw. Quite an upgrade from my Stihl MS250 haha. My little Stihl 192 has a muffler mod and is good for branches. I reused my OEM key on my 440 flywheel replacement so it probably gave itself a slight timing advance from the 14 year old worn key. I definitely could feel the difference in handles. Glad I got on this site and can learn from everyone and glad for that Farmertec kit! I feel so much more normal with my Stihl 440 up and running and putting it right back to work. Taking a little bit of getting used to it all dolled up.When my 044 got pinched by a tree, there were no AM parts. All the saw shops told me it was not worth fixing.

Well I did a number on my saw but all better now. Years ago I Used it to cut many trees, had them sawed by bandsaw mill into boards, built a house with the boards and rented the house that I got to live in with a bunch of hot female coeds from the university with 12000 students a mile away. Did that for over a decade. Wahooo!!! What looks better than my reconditioned saw is the picture on my wall of one of the cords body with nothing but colored buttons sprinkled on her body. Would post pic but do not want legal privacy problView attachment 318132I have yet to drop a tree or damage a saw on accident. You are the man!!! I built a house with boards from a bandsaw mill from trees I cut down with my StihlMagnum440. Then I rented to a bunch of college girls from the 12000 student university across the street. In spring time when the girls were out back in their bikinis it was like heaven.!!!! Now as far as Chinese...they build some excellent stuff! I had a Chinese female grad student that had the most excellent bottom end and top end I have ever had the pleasure to examine....she was looking to get a green card to stay in the US and I gladly enjoyed her without clothes promotional efforts for one whole summer. It was bliss on my earth until she figured out what I was doing...just enjoying the sampling but not going to marry her so she could get a green card. You look like a highly intelligent young man so perhaps you should take you muffler less saws and build yourself a house near a college and help the young female population (and yourself at the same time!).. The running a chainsaw so you do not have to listen to dogs barking definitely is a proven theory. One woodlot I was cutting had as neighbor with 6 dogs that had the fenced running right near where I worked. By pointing the StihllMagnum440 muffler their way while sawing, I could not hear any barking. If I had met you before that, I am sure you would have advised that DP mufflers were invented for barking dogs. You definitely look professional in your picture and I am sure you are well loved by your neighbors and your whole town and especially by the local police. I can only admire you with a tear in my eye and think to myself there is hope for the future of America! Merry Christmas,?! Muffler? Muffler? Who needs no stinking muffler!View attachment 318187
I live in town and am tinkering with saws, bikes, cars and trucks with little to no mufflers. My neighbors love me.
I'll be like "what you want to just let your dog bark all day?" Allow me to play you the song of my people.
By all accounts it's like a roulette wheel. Maybe things have changed and they are single source. This one was not serviceable by my standards as delivered. The cylinders look like they have changed recently.
Mr. Jason628,. I was just joking too and I apologize if I came across as insulting to you in any way. Just saying.... Looking forward to your posts and pics.I'm respectful of those that give respect. I don't make noise late in the evening. My above statement was mostly to be funny. I only have one neighbor who doesn't like me (that isn't a tweaker). He quit talking to me after I made a comment about his dog. The cops around here have more important things to deal with then noise complaints. I wouldn't call them anyway... I'm glad you like my picture.
Absolutely agree 100% on it being nice to see fuel level with AM tank! It is a big pet peeve of mine on fuel, oil etc containers that it is not easy to see fuel level. I have used containers to mix fuel in and you have to fill with a bigger container and they make the little fuel tank so that you have no idea how full it is...or filling containers at the gas station. Some of them have clear site strips that help. Even 2 cycle containers have level markers that are next to impossible to figure oil level...I just use a measuring cup. I have thrown out containers I can not see through. What good is a black oil bottle with quart level markers on it or a dark fuel tank with a full level line on it that you can not see the level of fuel being filled in from the outside or the level marker when you peek at fuel vs marker line from inside. Just plain stupid. Knowing the fuel level with a quick glance while cutting firewood is great because I fill up when it gets low and do not run out. Another peet peeve is small fuel tanks on saws that you have to keep filling...my little Stihl 192c (rear handle) drives me crazy when limbing. The 440 tank is about right...nice to take a breather when it is time to refill. My only complaint so far with my Farmertec kit is it did not come with a Magnum sticker so I ordered one separately. Seriously, I have run that saw so much just little things like that bug me...just like guys in here flicking the lever on their 462s when they have been running other saws for years. The AM handle felt weird and I am glad I got the Stihl one straighten out and back on. Felt good cutting firewood on the hillside in the winter sun...another peet peeve of mine, hot weather, it sucks for chainsawing. I would rather be cutting on a sunny clear 10 degree day than a 70 degree day so good thing I live in Maine. Wearing boot cleats is something I like too...hate loose footing.I've only had one saw damaged by a tree, and it was long before I was on this site and the "helper" with the rope did NOT do as he was told.
Went through the hinge trying to get it to fall, it pinched the bar and took the saw into the stump, nothing you could do from there.
Lesson learned, never trust "assigned voluntary help" (I was at the Fish + Game club doing my work hours) and never cut through your hinge!
Glad I was able to bring my beloved saw back to life, but wish I could have saved over $100 (which was a lot back then) by using an AM tank holder.
I actually prefer the AM tank holders (w/OEM control levers) as you can easily see your fuel level w/o popping the cap!
