I did the gas on leg but not with saw. A buddy was gonna buy a 454 with spun bearings from me but we had to zip across town so he could sell a 850 double pumper we'd just yanked off a Roadrunner first. I was holding the 4barrel in my lap and thought I'd just blib it and see if the secondaries would open. Well it was full of gas and right on my lap and schlang it soaked. Feels cool for a second then gets hot as hell.

I don't lend/hand out my saws to anyone - period!

I will come with my cars trunk full of saws (or with two saws in my hands by foot) and help cut nearly any ones firewood or tree, I may even allow someone to use any of my saws while I am present - but only I do the refueling and maintenance.
I have yet to encounter someone using a saw to my liking, either they don't load the saw letting the engine scream, or they over utilize the spikes and pull the saws engine down to a near still stand.
I also NEVER use someones premixed fuel!
Either I bring my own mix or I demand fresh pure gasoline on site so that I can mix my own fuel as needed with my own oil at my own ratio.
That's me too, pretty much all of it. Last time I used someone else's gas because I got to work early, they got there late and wouldn't work much, and I didn't think I'd need extra gas until I did all the work. Right when I tip their can in my saw a pile of saw dust falls out of the spout into the tank of my new saw, and I hate it when even a few crumbs fall in off the cap, they rarely do though.

Oh well. Figured I’d start this thread.

What are some choice things your buddies have done with chainsaws?

Of course, there are injuries, but I recently had 2 good friends do some ridiculous things and nearly or totally ruin their saws.

First was my buddies MS250 which he rarely runs and only for small stuff. He brings it over because it gets hot and runs odd. I ask him what kinda bar oil he uses and he says “I mix the oil with the gas, my saw doesn’t need bar oil”. I say, “there is an oil tank there Stevie”. Arguing ensues until he shows up with the saw and a 12 pack. I ask him what he thinks “the front” fuel tank is for, he thinks it’s got two tanks for fuel like some pickup trucks do and that filling it was optional. I made him put reading glasses on and read “OIL sign” on the side.

Yesterday, my buddy asks the dreaded question “can I borrow a saw, mine was running fine and now it won’t start”. One of my best friends actually bought the house across the street from me.

He tells me it cut great, now he’s been pulling and pulling and it won’t start. I ask him “Johnny, what mix ratio of oil to gas have you been using?” He starts to blink. I say “you didn’t put straight gas in the fuel tank, did you?”. More blinking. “My saw has a separate oil and fuel tank” he says. I pull the rope, near zero compression. He thought the saw was oil injected. I asked him if he has ever seen an oil injected saw.

Then it sets in and I ask him to pull the muffler and we get to look at a roached piston. I lend him a saw tuned really fat and tell him he’s not allowed to refuel it, walk up to me for fuel when u need it. I made him buy a gallon of Truefuel E-free 40:1 mix at Home Depot. I figured even at $20 a gallon, it would keep him out of trouble.

Two recent stories. I’ll be rebuilding the straight gassed one this winter.
++ on Trufuel. Brother in law ( now ex) MS 310 no start. I replaced all fuel things and rebuilt carb, tuned. Chain really bad. Ground it put new one on. Less than year no start again. Rebuilt carb etc again. I investigated. Yes he mixed correctly but found his mixed can, no cap in the rain.
Sharpie marked USE ONLY TRUFUEL. Put several cans with saw and several new chains.

I don't mind to loan out my OPE stuff. Anything material actually.
Just never ever let somebody use their own fuel and my chainsaws only goes with my wife or brother from an other mother.
Everyone else get's myself as a package deal.

A good friend of mine who often is in need of a chainsaw (one of the few people who would get that package deal even with an hammer).

He just assulted his own cheap chainsaw.
Use the bar as a crowbar while spinning,
Use veggie oil instead of bar oil.
Use that same bar oil to add to the gas when he didn't think there was enough two stroke oil in it.
Measure the ratio by feel every tank (that's right, pour in straight gas and then squirt a bit 2 stroke oil to top that of).
Ofcourse never sharpen a chain. Maybe slap it with a flatfile to show dominance.

Well....

Buddy texts me “are you home?”. Oh no....

The second saw won’t run now. He’s so embarrassed he almost bought another saw to not tell me.

The 026 I gave him actually had it’s carb take a shít. I tried a quick rebuild and it was flooding the saw, didn’t pressure test it.

Stuck a cheap China carb on it for now. Went over with my 261 and did most of the work for him.

And BTW, square chain sucks for work. Great stuff till you need to touch it up, then it takes 4x as long as roundfile.

For the "can borrow a saw" it's either I come with the saws or I'm willing to lend my 350 to people who have a clue as I don't mind if that saw gets hosed. Worst thing so far was bar and chain being a mess.

One of my neighbors wife bought her husband a saw (craftsman whatever) to clear the trees for the pool. I came by and he was finishing cutting up an oak w/ my other neighbor's MS250. He said the craftsman wouldn't cut well -- he managed to cut through 1.5 pieces of oak. I looked -- 2 cycle oil in the bar oil tank, mixed gas in the gas tank at least, chain on backwards, bar burnt pretty well. I dumped the 2 cycle bar oil, turned the chain around, filled bar oil tank, fired it up and made 3 cuts through oak that did fine (as you would expect with brand new chain!).

Cheers.

I’ve yet to lend a saw out that comes back ok.

One friend decided it would be cool to customize my ported 026. Sanded all the paint off a new Stihl bar and the clutch cover and painted it all up for me. Thanks Mark. He didn’t get why I wasn’t happy.

Lended my sister-in-law’s boyfriend one to help clean up after Sandy. I got back a saw with the pull cord hanging halfway out and a torn intake boot after some mounting screws came out.

I think Rich is correct above. I’ll lend you the saw but I come with it.
Exactly how I feel. But luckily most of my friends have there own Saw's to mess up.

The neighbor is gonna be like WTF when he goes to sharpen that chain for the first time. The metal hardened from overheating the chain. Lol

He's definitely not the type to even attempt sharpening Mason LOL. Probably have dealer grind it or just get another chain.

I usually tell my neighbors to give me their chains and I put a nice edge on. I have files and roller guides for 0.325, 3/8 lo pro, and 3/8 along with depth gauge tool which covers most everything I encounter. Most chains I see are semi and I like that stuff the least. Get a good edge on 0.325 and favorite is 3/8 LGX or EXL chain. Sharpening is therapy for me... Most rewarding when a chain performs well after going over it. I like the challenge of getting a beat chain to cut well again.

Most newbies I run into wreck their chain and try to keep cutting by pushing on the saw killing components. Oh well... More challenges to fix !
