We need to invent a strap to hold the decomp in on high compression saws. My 066 still has 160 psi with the decomp held in
Are you using the Stihl, Husky, or aftermarket decomps ?

I have a late flat top 066 no decomp saw that is 100% original and it has a decomp cylinder with a plug in it. I guess they had already changed cylinders before they changed the plastic.

So take 2 identical saws. Lets call them Stihl 066's
One is stock 150 psi
One is machined 220 psi

What is the difference in pull cord resistance?

Do the big compression saws break pull starts without them?
on a big cc saw with comp over 200 i would have a decomp for sure, especially with the timing advanced. makes it way easier on the gear. my 660 is a super biatch without it.

I handed my 066 red light with no decomp to my brother and told him tp pull the cors slow and feel the compression it has.
He said..... How the hell do you start that?

I put it on the floor and had it running 3 to 4 pulls cold, explaining yu need to be confident with the pull cord.
Anthingh less and you bust your arm and the pull rope

or the next problem..

3mm rope and a monkey'd 262 dont mix. broke 2 different ropes 4 times. gone to a 4mm rope now.. only just fits. no decomp on this saw.

Just my opinion, but it seems to me that decomps are intended to reduce wear and tear on starter components just as much as they are intended to make pulling the cord easier???

I use em for that reason. I figure what does it hurt to slow down wear and tear on the starter components.. and my saws always start just fine..

To each their own though.

I often don't use them on a cold saw, as the saw will generally start better w/o it, but I like using them on a warm saw, especially at the end of the day!

I have heard of some saws burning down from decomp leaks. It sure makes me happy to know that no saw of mine has a decomo. So when it goes to work I know it's sealed and safe

What is the difference between an oil seal leaking and a decomp leaking? Many more oil seals lead to scored cylinders than decomps. I'm with Ride Red. I use it for the convienience just as much as for wear and tear. And if it doesnt make a difference on my TM 066 because the button pops almost as soon as I start pulling pulling the cord, so be it. Then its for the psychological factor!!!!

I want to buy plugs for my decomp valves on my smaller saws.

I just ordered 6 off the bay from china, I think they were about a buck each shipped. Most decomps regaurdless of brand are the same size thread, or that's what I have noticed. OEM ones can be ordered from your dealer, but for the price I think the china ones should be ok it will be expensive if there not. OEM ones are most likely a few bucks in the US, here they are $20+.
