Hi Folks

I am after peoples opinions around using a decomp valve or a plug.

At the moment I am running normal compression saws. No 200+ psi monsters....... yet
The main advantage I see in a decomp valve is less wear and tear on the pull starter. I dont have chicken wings and start my 066 red light without one no problems at all. You just have to hold it down tight and be confident with the pull cord.

My concern is leakage, and if this problem is compounded as compression increases.

Problem I see with removing it with a high comp motor is the pull starter will suffer.

So...... I am interested to hear peoples opinions, thoughts and experiences with decompression valves on stock and modified hi compression saws.

Are they just for chicken wings or do they have their place?

Decomps make me feel so much younger. !!!!
I pretty much ripped them all out untill I got old.....now I dug them all out of the garbage and put them back on...

Stay young guys.
If you are goin to use a decomp then use the husky decomps, I hear they last longer in higher comp saws

So take 2 identical saws. Lets call them Stihl 066's
One is stock 150 psi
One is machined 220 psi

What is the difference in pull cord resistance?

Do the big compression saws break pull starts without them?

I'm with Deets here.
I pull every decomp valve and plug them.
When you decide to start one of mine, you'd better be sure thats what you're going to do

I noticed starter parts break when the recoil pulls the person trying to start the saw
I noticed starter parts last when the person pulls the recoil and starts the saw

pull them for building, install and test them for running on work saws
on GTG or fun saws I would guess the limited number of starts they see would limit the wear on the saw so omitting them is a good thing
Yep they can leak, but saw parts and body parts appreciate them in use :)

Limited number of starts at a GTG?

I thought GTG's were all about BS'ing, eating and nut scratching.

I wish decomps were better quality amoung many pro saws. It would annoy you to burn up a cylinder due to a leaky decomp. 40/50/60cc saws don't need them as much as bigger ones. I agree too with Moparmyway about being confident using the pull start is good for starter assemblies. l use a rescue handle on my 210psi 660 and put at tdc before starting. They can bite when cold and you give it a girlie pull.

Decomps are s-word to me. They go in the trash.

Two of my logging buddies have mastermind 660 and 661.

The 660 is 3 years old now, no recoil failures yet.

Their stock 660, has already broken recoil pawls a few months ago.

Those guys start their saws very easily after 25 years of 066/660's.

I'm with Angelo. The older you get, the more your bones won't move like they used too. After working outside for 40 years (full time during the winter too) you work smarter, not harder. Got decomps on my 80+ cc saws and I use them for the convenience of starting. Wish I could plug them, but I heal slower too. Got a TM ported 066 that is a bear to start with the decomp much less without it. Ahhhh, the golden years!!! They suck!!!
