This is such a shame. It’s a beautiful Sachs-Dolmar 114. Clean as a pin! Except….
I just purchased this from a reputable business online. I haven’t decided what I want to do yet. D5C49B6E-A381-472F-BB09-AACEB1962402.jpeg
It doesn’t leak yet. Almost certainly will eventually.
I believe I can fight the stuff on the engine case and win. It looks like the tank will have to be replaced. To me anyway.

That's a shame. I had heard that before but never seen any evidence until now.

Will it continue to deteriorate now that it is off the concrete?

How about calcium hydroxide breaking case into magnesium hydroxide. Or calcium carbonate changing case into magnesium carbonate. Turns metal to a salt and flakes off. We need a chemist here.

Dies it happen to aluminum too? Makita says the 9010 is aluminum, I thought it was magnesium.

In the past whenever I read about someone having to seal/ weld / JBW a metal tank I always imagined the damage came from the inside out. Like maybe a slug of water rotted a hole thru it. I believe now it’s far more likely the damage came from outside, like what happen to this saw. This is gonna sound funny, but I have always, even as a kid , had an aversion to setting a chainsaw on concrete. I never did it when I was allowed to use it. I always set it on the grass. My father hung it up (out of reach ) when we were done with it. I’m pretty sure it was a Sears something or another. I’m rambling….

The 9010 should definitely be magnesium. I've never heard it being aluminum.

so is cardboard enough of a barrier to prevent this from happening? most of my saws sit on cardboard for the oil dripping most are on the bottom shelf of a metal rack with carboard but there are a few on the floor with cardboard. also does the age of the concrete make a difference? my garage floor is really old.

Just my opinion, but I don’t think cardboard is a good barrier. It will certainly retain moisture which will accelerate the corrosion.

I did some reading on the subject, and while it doesn’t come right out and say it, once the moisture is removed from the equation the electrolysis has to cease. So, it may be as simple as getting it off the concrete and dry.
I just ran the piss out if this little saw and I’m happy with it. It still doesn’t leak. I have ordered a replacement tank from CCC and will eventually get around to changing it I reckon.

Electrolysis
--A form of same .One component of Portland cement is aluminia which comes from the blue clay used in the slurry that becomes burned into a clinker in the high temperature kiln .This element I think is one valance electron away from aluminum and tries to absorb the saw into the concrete .Other metals may react something similar .Most use some form of paint .Stihl and perhaps others use e-coat as a preservative .
