So here is the 44mm OEM jug. Yes you can feel those marks, yes it ate some crank rollers, heck yeah we are gonna run it.

I’ve run much worse than that with both good and catastrophic results. You have the right attitude going into the build with this cyl: “if it grenades, it grenades”.

As previously stated, just make sure your bevels are good. With the small gouge that goes to the top of the cyl you may see lower compression numbers initially. With some break in and good fuel/oil mix you will see those numbers rise up and level out.

Much ado about dings from a needle .A high spot could hurt you but a low spot normally won't because if in the ring travel the ring will bridge right over it especially if you don't get stingy with the mix oil .A needle or just about anything the saw swallows will ding the transfer .You just have to buff it out .
You just have to remember the trapped compression doesn't start until the ring makes it above the upper exhaust port roof which usually isn't affected from a tossed needle or piece of swallowed junk .

Looking good Jimmy, remember the bevel.

The wash has quite a bit of information associated with it. You can see the a/f mix coming out of transfers, you can see direction of a/f mix and how it forces the exhaust out, you can see the begining of burn, you can also get a hint as to wether or not it is lean or rich. Kind of like reading a plug.

Great pic, thanks for posting.

-another thing . Many people are striving for perfection on a rebuild ,factory perfect .Might not be possible using old parts .Which doesn't really mean it won't work well .Then they get all excited if somebody can make three cuts on an 8" poplar cant faster than them . I've never seen square wood with bark on it myself .Fan fare and hoopla .

Maybe I should start a thread called "When cranks go wild"?

I'm far from fan fare an hoopla....and I've never run into the rare, square, barkless tree. Maybe they don't grow in NC.

I've seen a few McCullochs that blew the needles out of the piston .Which was a pizz poor place to put them .One that puked the crank bearing and it was a Dolmar .I saved all of them . The cylinders were okay ,the pistons and crank obviously needed replacement .
Had a buddy's Stihl that swallowed something and exploded the piston, also saved .It lives in my shed as I type .

If time allows this weekend I will time the OEM jug. I do have T-ball starting this weekend, a yard to mow (requires putting snow plow back in storage and the mower under the tractor) and I have promised myself that the bumper sitting in my way since October of 2017 is going to be installed on my truck. Tired of looking at the dented one every day...

Always plenty to do, list never ends and seems to actually get longer nearer to spring breakup.

That it does. I'm looking forward to being outside some though... been an especially long winter for us locally. Normally we are not kept indoor for long periods but constant rain this winter has done just that.

We are about 3 - 4 weeks away from having all the snow and ice gone, the ground is now thawing and getting mucky.

No progress this weekend. Did get the bumper switched on my truck, snow plows put away, this mower finished up and ready for sale, yard mowed, etc. Maybe this week.

Not to worry, they made pills ,generic out of Canada for next to nothing .This is 2019 ,they've got stuff to fix anything .:)

But that costs money! I just use some electrical tape and a couple q-tips to get it propped up all proper like. Seems to do the trick most of the time. The q-tips add some extra “stimulation” for her.

Well life has gotten busy as the weather has broke. I did grab the OEM jug off the bench and was just looking at it..checking things over and I noticed the piston held tight to the intake side had a "bump" to it. Hmm. It is in the last .015" of the up travel...I kept feeling and looking and then I found this. It is either a roller or bit of the cage from the original OEM crank that is embedded at the lip of the Nikasil and the band. I can try to gouge that area but of there is that bit of steel embedded what else can work its way out.

Like I said earlier, don`t ruin a new or good piston running in that beat cylinder.
