Hi all, I'm looking to remove the sapwood from some logs and want to roughly get down to leave only the heartwood section (see image) and was thinking the best mechanical method would an hydraulic log splitter. Main concern is that I don't want to split the logs down the centre however have them offset so the split runs down the sapwood layer for removal of same.
I have quite a few logs to do! Appreciate any thoughts and ideas. Cheers

What are your plans for the heartwood? Milling?

sometimes when I am splitting my wife will ask me to try and save the heartwood, its maybe a 50/50 chance I can split all the wood around it and have a perfect roumd piece of heartwood, it all depends on the piece being split, for no rhyme or reason some come out nice, others do not

A split rail mill will do it up to 6 feet or however long split rails are. You could obviously slab them end to end with wedges, axe, maul, sledge hammer.

If you are only doing short lengths a good bandsaw....not a mill will do well. I have 20" Powermatic. Long lengths a mill but you will lose heartwood.
