I don’t know the species name for that crappy wood but it grows in our fence lines and is a nuisance in every way possible. Well, it cuts decent but that’s about it. Sucks to split, dang near rots before it’s dry, stinks and splits way too hard. We cuss at it calling it elm and willow and anything else we can think of when working with it.

Alright, I had to tell somebody about this that happened today, please see the pictures.. I just bought a 25ton Countyline splitter after owning/using a 22ton Huskee for 20yrs, I go out today and get a load of this wood that I've used the Huskee on (in fact from this very same tree) and this Countyline simply cannot handle it.. not sure of the type of wood, maybe Poplar? But it's a low quality stringy wood that only gets used in the outdoor boiler I supply wood for.. on this wood the Countyline would stall out the engine and wouldn't split it and I notice a little bit of Hydraulic fluid leaking from the front cylinder seal (couple drops) so I figure this is a very bad thing.. I looked down the body of the splitter and it almost looks like the whole I-beam is twisted and I could see/feel it flexing when I was trying to split this wood.. half a truckload of it later I call the Tractor Supply I bought it from and am now supposed to bring it in tomorrow to have them look at it.. as you can imagine I'm really upset by this and I was just looking for ANY input or help from all of you great people here on what I should do tomorrow when I bring it to the Tractor supply.. I'm supposed to bring some of the pieces of wood along and I figured they're gonna have me show them.
please look at Pictures below of the twisted I beam (hope you can see it) and of the wood that did this.
I wonder if the pump or valve bypass pressure was set too high? I've used one of those, and the the lever got left up once when I tried to start it, and it wouldn't crank. They should crank even with the valve open and cylinder at it's end in that direction. Otherwise you get the stored kinetic energy in the engine forcing out a pressure spike as it stalls, which can cause leaks or a blowout. I don't know much about them, but supposedly there's a bypass adjustment on the valve, a detent release adjustment there too, and a pressure adjustment on the pump. The engine shouldn't stall when tough wood stops the wedge. I've heard of the ram shaft bending because of improper adjustments. Of course the manual may not mention those because they don't want someone to crank up the pressure, break something or get hurt and sue them.

Box elder?

Really dense and heavy?

We also see Hackberry- it is very dense and the bark is sharp, like a rasp.

Updated picture, both PictureThis and Plant Net say it is Black Tupelo. Very hard to split! Not great firewood.
Dear JNoss , this is in n.c. we call
Black Gum , 5 or 8 inches diameter use for back sticks in the wood heater, last two days. This wood used for a joke on friends with a
go devil or a wood splitter. This tree you see a lot of mistletoe living in.
Buck , in n.c.
When we were young and didn't kno any better cut this stuff and tried to split it not to good.
