An Arboristsite member recommended that years ago for rusty chains. That's what I've been using ever since. It really works great on chains that have been left outside.

Me as well. I first tried it a couple years ago on a stuck piston in a old 1030's Johnson outboard motor.
Let it sit for a day and freed right up.

Since we are on this topic, I discovered a new use for penetrating oil. I bought a Stihl 390 P/C kit for an upgrade project. The company that packed the kit forced the piston inside the cylinder and wedged a chunk of the pin's plastic wrap between the piston and the cylinder. The piston would thus not fall out of the cylinder and was stuck.

I tried rapping it a few times and even used a hardwood dowel to press down on the piston through the spark plug opening, but that failed -- until I decided to try some WD-40. I sprayed that inside the cylinder from bottom up and top town, waited a few minutes, and then rapped it again on the bench top. Bingo! It fell out. Then I found that piece of plastic wrap, shook my head, mumbled a few words, and continued.

The upgrade then went smoothly and the saw ran fine with a lot more power.

Besides Kroil and some of the other old standbys ( like sweets) I use Gunzilla and its stable mate Superzilla both are plant based no dino stuff in them ( not that I care) The superzilla as a penetratent has been working better for me than any of the other offerings available on the shelves including the acetone tranny mix

I got a small bottle of the Mouse Milk and it is very impressive, immediately freed the small exhaust bolts on my PP475 muffler and I used it on a 1"1/4 bolt holding a access to an old well tank on ,it let go and unscrewed within 2 minutes. I definitely recommend it.

Never heard if this MM before. Have had great results with Kroil and Zep. The ole panther piss aka PB works ok.
I've also used Marvelous Mystery Oil with good results when nothing else was available.

Mouse Milk sounds like something to try. Who sells it?
They all work to a point. I remember dad having cans of Liquid wrench back in the 1970's or sooner in his farm workshop. I have an old can on my homestead and used it now and then when it was handiest. PB has been my main go to 3 or more decades but wd40 I keep at hand because it's more multipurpose so I aim to have a can in my vehicles . Keep Deep Creep on hand also and the transmission oil blend for the worsest. Think I will lighten up with PB and deep creep and look for a new can of Liquid wrench and the mouse milk.

I figured I would drag this ancient thread from the archives and see what folks are thinking on penetrating lubes today.

There are 2 formulations of Kroil. Aero Kroil and Sili Kroil. The Sili Kroil doesn’t work worth a crap. The Aero Kroil works exceptionally well, it also works as a protectant. I spray my chains with it after degreasing them and sharpening to keep from rusting.

In my world I don't have time to spray something with a penetrating oil and wait.

I use lots and lots of heat.
And this stuff.

When it is applied to the hot objects it also billows smoke like skinny rear tires on a big block car.

Heat has it's place but rosebuds don't do well on pistons and cylinders

I am wondering how many use ATF/Acetone.

I use ATF/Acetone but I hate the fumes if you heat it up. If you let it soak in, it’s pretty good at loosening stuff.

I use Deep Creep a lot too. Faster, aerosol, nearly as effective.
