I just had a 465 rancher kick my rear last week. The oil screen and feed tube was all gummed up from whatever oil they were using. I should have pulled it appart 100% the first time. But live and learn.

I'd say if you were going to use a bio oil. It would be wise to dump some mix or diesel in the oil res and give it a good cleaning and a few piss revs before being stored. It was a pita to get everything working again on this 465. Should have just bought a new hose, screen and pump.

@Moparmyway any separation on the mix you sat aside?

does it even matter if it does separate?
Since I've mixxed it, it's gotten down to the lower 20's for a few nights. I'll snatch a picture later today after I get home from work, I've been busy with my girls softball and work.
I still might just put it in the freezer for a few days if it hasnt seperated .......... I'll also check to see if anything has gummed up on my 462 & 500i

We use straight canola for 20” bars and shorter. Zero issues with temps over 20, under that it can congeal if any moisture gets in but runs fine after it thaws. No blown up bars or pump issues over the past 3 years. Highly recommend

Any trouble if saw sits? I have personally had veggie blends rot in my tank. However I’ve read STarAIGHT canola will not

I tried Canola oil couple years ago. Oiled fine, problem was when I let it set over winter. It gummed up chain and it would not move. Took chain off cleaned rail with wd40 dumped tank refilled clean oil everything worked fine.
My favorite bar oil is used hydraulic oil from log splitter and tractor. No cost used. Different case for new oil going in. Not so cheap.

I’ve kinda used up my resources on the used hydraulic oil. Was using new 5 gallon jugs of 303 hydraulic oil. Works great.

canola is 6.50 a gallon is why I’m trying this route

Don’t know honestly. I run a small outfit year round so nothing is dormant for long. That certainly makes sense though.

I think I'll stick to a canola/regular bar oil blend for keeping cost down in hopes of also avoiding any gumming issues, as long as there are no issues with blending.

Canola has a bunch of things going for it: less harm to oneself with breathing in bar oil particles (especially aloft when the powerhead is by your face), less enviro impact where you’re working (especially by water), generally cheaper where we are and it’s never out of stock. We do lots of shoreland work and not uncommon to see oil spray on the water surface, heck of a lot less guilt when it’s easily biodegradable!

How about emulsifying oil mixed with water?
I believe Oregon had something like that in their offerings.
Basically drilling/milling fluid. o_O

Canola seems to work fine... What about used fryer oil (sunflower in my case)? How to filter it?
