This tangent seems to be a Bill G Challenge which you've a solid reputation for, and in an oil thread nonetheless! (It's like the Internet version of opening a portal to hell!)

1. Gasoline and diesel come from the same base product. Gasoline used to be used to start high-compression diesel engines (2-minute mark shows the gas tank, spark plugs, carburetor, etc., the 7-minute mark shows the diesel engine running on gas). Both gas and diesel are used to run engines, and from that standpoint are substantially similar, to the point both are bio-fuel targets with similar end-goals.

2. That's a distraction so far off the bar oil topic I personally wouldn't go there. There are threads discussing canola oil jelling up bar oil tanks over time (post #82), if you're interested.
My FIL had a very old McCormick Deering tractor. Hand crank only. It started on gas and ran on kerosene.

Civil debate is a lost art. And I'm always glad to see it.
I totally agree! Sadly some in society today have lost the ability to have a spirited discussion. I think this is a spirited discussion but heck as my gorgeous ex-wife used to say "Dammitt Bill your wrong" That was generally followed by me saying "Yes Dear"

I wonder if a little STP (Super Tomcat Piss according to my Dad) would act as a tackifier mixed into standard motor oil?
My understanding of STP is that it is rich in ZDDP (zinc dithiophosphate), which is great at eliminating sliding friction (bar rails to chain)acting as a sacrificial agent so the steel of chain and bar rails is protected from wear and heat. I add a few Tbs to my home-brew bar oil and shake vigorously to incorporate into the oil.

How much does it cost you to make a gallon?

Anywhoo …….

I ran 8 tanks of fuel through my 026 and 044 today and ran my used oil mix for half the tanks and straight bar oil for the other half just to be able to post that I did so. It was roughly 65f outside and I noticed no noticeable differences in performance. The motor oil of course ran through a little quicker but heck, it was hot out.

That being said, for $4.49/gal I’d be buying actual bar oil all day long. Maybe. The mix is still cheaper and seems to work just as well ……

I have to go up to the elevator tomorrow to get 2 chemical totes of used diesel oil. I will not be putting it in saws though

I only use it in my 42’ jeep, for flat tappets, tb zinc plus Lucas.

I picked up a tote of used oil from the elevator the other day. I was going to get two but I was not sure I wanted to stress the old trailer that much. This one is 330 gallon and full to the brim.

Do you filter it, ‘refine’ it, or clean / treat it in any way?

For bar and chain, or other uses?

Thanks.

Philbert

I would never use it as bar oil but I know others do which is fine because many would never use it the way I do.
I use it along with junk tires to burn brush piles

If you want less expensive actual bar oil you have to time it right which usually in late spring .Menards often has good deals, some times TSC on the house brand but not that country club neat and tidy Husqvarna branded oil .That's priced like it were for motor oil for a fully restored 1927 Rolls Royce or something.I have used straight auto tranny fluid years ago when it still got colder that a polar bears nose ,never used old crankcase oil .I don't claim to be a hot shot west coast Paul Bunyan type and might only use 2 gallons per year if that much ..
Lately using 3 cube saws cutting wind blown small ash a little saw doesn't blow oil like my old giant Homelite in the avater .Takes a lot of cuts to get a cord but doesn't need split .Burns just as well as 24 inch split rounds with a lot less work .
