Personally I've bought one $35 4L bottle of "bar oil" in my time on this planet so far...
Have used all kinds of free or very cheap (not bar oil) for thousands of hrs in saws over the years. About the only oil I'll stay away from is some the gear oils as they stink.

Might have to just pass that cost along to the customer if you can't find a cheap source. I know that's never a good feeling but, sometimes it just is what it is.

Menards just had mystic bar oil on clearance and i stocked up. 4.99 a gallon. NAPERVILLE, IL still has some, sold out most other places.
The Menards by me doesn't have the mystic oil anymore. This is what they carry now .

You won't regret stocking up at that price. Even if you find a slightly better deal. I would buy twice what I think I needed. Look at the price on stuff you have now, I've got things that I use that have doubled over the last few years.

I have yet to use that but the Cam2 stuff they used to carry was thick.
Below 10 degrees, cut the top off and use an ice cream scoop to get it in the saw thick.
I think I still have a jug of it.

I think Fleet has the Mystic. Tall Timber and I thought I saw quarts of Husqvarna and Echo there too?

I’ll second on the Mystic - I usually buy it locally for $6-7/gal and that have helped me a lot. I’m sure it won’t be that price next time..

I used to buy Stihl Woodcutter but at $13/gal I cut my costs in half going with the Mystic.

My brother buys his by the 55 gal drum. Not sure what brand though. But bulk is definitely cheaper than pre-packaged..

Mystic, cam2, pulan pro… all gooder oils. Usually pick up a case of whatever Menards has on special for around 5-6 bucks per gallon.

I’ve also used canola oil with a bit of stp and auto transmission fluid mixed in to prevent polymerization and provide tackiness. Works gooderest in the winter too. Pretty forked up that a supposed food oil is cheaper than petroleum oil.

Just keep in mind that whatever alternative you use, you're going to end up breathing some of it. There was a thread on another forum about
running used motor oil and one guy (accurately) posted that some bar oil ends up "aerosolized", which means it's going into your lungs while
cutting.

Anyone that wears eye glasses can confirm this after some time cutting - my glasses will be “hazed” with bar oil after each day on the saw. You don’t see it, but it’s definitely there.
