I split some 30-36" red oak today with my wetterlings and stihl branded ox like the one above.

I dont care for how fat the handle is on the ox but it flat works. As does the wetterlings but I am quite impressed with the ox splitting ax. Looking forward to trying the maul. I also hate the lacquer on the handle. I may scrape it off and linseed it.

Anybody tried the helko werk splitting axe or log splitter (as they call it)?

I saw a buddy of mine had the splitting axe in the back seat of his truck the other day but it looked unused. He has a lot of nice stuff/tools but rarely uses the cool stuff he gets. I may get it from him next time I have a chance to split some wood. I'd be surprised if it did any better than an x27 given the weight (4.5lb) but the design is slightly different.

I have not tried it but it has a good reputation from what I have researched.

Start whittling, that's one thing I did not like about the few Ox's I had, weird shaped eyes, ya pretty much were stuck buying handles from them. But that was 10-12 years ago, maybe someone is now making replacement handles for the odd shaped Ox heads eyes? If not start carving your own....

If it's the Vario line, make sure you keep a good eye on the bolts that hold the head on. I've read of people breaking those, because they never stay tight. That the main reason I never bought one. Other than that, I like the head shape and I bet it splits good, I'm just not much on the head setup. If that's the one you're talking about that is.

Makes sense. Never thought about it, but if they dont red loctite em in I could see them loosening up over time.

Iltis Ox Head arrived today - took a few swings with it quick out back on a couple stubborn pieces of Red Oak that wouldn’t split with my Collins last weekend (in fact the Collins just bounced off!) and this bad boy split it no problem! I have a feeling that I am really going to like this axe!

5lb, 4lb rafter, 6lb. I have ideas about hollow cheeks…long poll on the 6. It’s balanced.

6lb, 4lb rafter, 5lb. Nice round poll on the 6. The back of the 5 comes ground flat and I think that and the corner chamfers might chew wedges. I rounded my 28” ‘banger.
