I tore down the builder 288IMG_20230408_180648704_HDR.jpg
The cylinder and piston are in great condition
But the crank bearings were exposed because of the oil pump drive and clutch assembly missing
So the crank bearings need changed
The rod bearing is good
Had a mud daubers tomb on top of the piston.

These 4mm ball end drivers bits are handy especially for the 1and 2 series

Amazon sent me the wrong eklinds
These are trash I ordered the solid plastic screwdriver style
And I had to get t27 for Stihl crap.

I had seen those out there. Raised an eyebrow that one of these companies made an effort on a small saw. One of them ought to do a 346 IMO. Farmertec has concentrated mostly on the big saws. I get the financial argument in that the price spread between clones and originals is greater with the larger saws. But average size saws far outsell the big ones. That's why I think they'll have a hit if they in fact come out with the rumored 262.

I'm surprised they copied the 543 instead of the 346
I've never actually seen a 543 in person
But have worked on dozens of 340/345/346/350/353s
The 262 will be a hit also.

I fixed a 170 for my 91 year old neighbor IMG_20230411_104241064_HDR.jpg
I put a farmertec ms250 carb on it I had to drill out the impulse location
For the 170 and plug the 250 location

If anyone is looking for some really cheap chain Hipa is doing a 2 for 10 dollar deal on their website. Just got 4 loops for 20 bucks, it’s definitely not anything special but they have some long sizes, 24inch and up, available at that price.

Let the 1184 set up for a few hours and ran that blu88 yesterday afternoon. Absolutely ran better at 165psi vs the out of box 145psi. I did notice the lo speed circuit being a little fussy to adjust, but got it where it was happy. And it was fine in the wood, so not a problem that needs correcting even though I have an OEM carb if needed.

Part of the debate Walt and I were having earliet is what question are we trying to answer. For me, it's not a question of how good I can make it, it's really all about how good they make it. Sure, you can consider OEM carb, ignition, and top end upgrades. But if you have to do all that, then what's the point? For one thing, those parts would be twice the cost of the saw. And if they are genuinely needed, IMO the saw isn't ready for market. Besides, I've got 2 real 288's in nice shape already. 👌

On the other hand, if as a platform that you want to see how far you can take it, and the dollars don't matter, then Walt's course of action is fine. Keep in mind that we're both a little spoiled in that we have plenty of junk OEM saws lying around from which to grab free parts to upgrade these saws. But for the guy who has to buy a $200 carb to make a saw usable, the numbers don't work too good. 🤔

That saw did have some milling under its belt and that was where the muffler paint when...brown, still it actually looks pretty good inside :)

I was wondering if the low side sensitivity was actually the sealing of intake manifold parts, ignition, or carb. That was where I was going to go with it ... until the g395 showed up. :) But I have to admit that blue 288 is a LOT of saw just as it is for the money.

The heads up is much appreciated. 👍 Stocked up for a couple years now. Hard to beat 84dl 3/8 for $5. Thanks again 🍻

Thanks I got 8 more full chisel 84dls on the way

I got these off eBay yesterday has the old lubridot style links
It cut as good as any out of the box chain
Almost every saw I get in has trashed chains especially tree service or logger guy's
So I'll throw a fresh loop to test the saws and tune them
They always buy the chains from me
For 10.00 instead of 40.00 for Stihl at the local dealer.
I sold around 50 20" upstart 72dl to a firewood seller over the year's
That was around 400.00 instead of over 1200.00 at the dealer
They've held up great for us.

Wonder if that is a good choice for bucking muddy logs on the landing. I'm kind of faced with a dilemma , ANOTHER set of muddy from winter logging logs to cleanup and buck. 93dl chains are at least 40 bucks now even at a discount. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of beat up chains...... too much of a PITA to file to good. SO sell them cheap and get chains as you have, of buy a grinder to try and salvage them.... would take 1/2 each to file on the saw after putting them back on a bar. But there is no way I want to waste a couple of MORE new chains on the muddy mess at the landing.

I don't waste my Stihl, Oregon, Carlton,Windsor, tilton chains anymore
I'll throw a 6-10.00 loop on and cut yard tree's all day without worrying about junking a chain
IMG_20230305_124006752_HDR.jpg
I cut this honey locust for a guy
His wife has filled the limbs with ceramic fairy's I hit one and pieces of iron ore for some reason she called this a remembrance tree whatever the hell that is
I had to resharpen a couple of times.
The local sanitation board uses saws to cut roots they run Stihl chains and pay about 20.00 a piece for each chain they dull instantly
then they pay 15.00 each to get them resharpened it's crazy.
the china chain does stretch a bit initially much like Oregon but has been about as durable as Oregon for me the last 6 years
Stihl is my favorite but I'm not paying what my saws cost to buy them.

I bought one last fall...
It lasted 1.5 tanks before it seized up on e-free @40:1
I sold it cheap.... without even taking it apart.

The guy that bought it started a warranty claim and they ended up sending him a new p&c kit.

I know of two people that have torn into these particular saws and discovered the intake gasket was not cut out for the strato port.
