The gear should be seated down inside the ring, not sticking out like that.

Other than that…your saw is too clean…looks weird.

Well too it all apart and I'm sure the oiler is engaged and still have the same issue ?
After further inspection it is an AM clutch assembly...could that be the issue ?KIMG20250225_100338595.JPG

That
Looks like maybe the wrong oil pump worm gear. The worm gears usually sit almost flush with the oil pump body. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a brown worm gear on a 288. From what I remember they are usually black. View attachment 451911
That brown piece you see is just a plastic dust cover .
The worm gear is brass on this saw
I'll take it apart again and post some pics .

Did you ever take the outter silver cup-shape ring out? you put it the wrong way. Everything is flush and never above the cup ring.

And I also believed the brass gear is brass only, no plastic around it(looks like the remain of the old broken dust shield).

Oh, that's right, you tried that am clutch.
You have the 1st year 288. Any am parts will be for the latest model year.
Looks like something in the mix won't work there.
That silver ring was in backwards in the one pic
