Cannot provide a like for that.

it’s a combined fireplace barbecue and husky dealer so I wasn’t surprised when the owner didn’t know but when he got his husky tech guy to come out and look at it I was taken aback when he’d never seen a 288 before .
The local Stihl guy is the opposite of that .

I took my 288 into my local and no one working there had ever seen one . I thought they were winding me up at first .

Have they not been in business very long or what [emoji3061]

They have but their chainsaw guy is only about 30. there was an old guy who used to fix the small motors most people weren’t interested in fixing . I bought my 288 off him when he retired and sold off all the saws people didn’t want to pay to get fixed .

Greetings all,
I've just spent the week reading this and other threads on 28x saws.

I've scored a mint 281XP for $200AUD.

If I'm reading the serial and cylinder stamps correctly it is a 1986 saw that still has hone marks on the cylinder and piston. B cylinder and B piston, not sure what that means though.

I'm guessing the reason it's in such good condition is that it's near impossible to start, once you get it started it's a real powerhouse.

I would like to use the saw in an Alaskan mill with my 42" bar but once the mill is assembled starting the saw is a nightmare.

With the base gasket the squish is 74 thou.

My conundrum is: do I swap the piston and cylinder for a 288 with decomp or is there some way to make starting easy without sacrificing power? Elestostart cord and handle? Secret technique? Distilled unicorn fuel?

Clean and grease the starter always helps. D handle and great starter rope is an update.

When I first started using it a couple years ago I was like wtf there’s no felling sight lines on it. Discovered pretty quickly that the handle bar serves this purpose perfectly. Y’all probably already know that but figured it might be worth sharing for anyone new to the deuce 88.
I'm pretty sure that the raised lines on the clutch cover and pull starter are actually felling lines.

Thanks, I had already changed the rope as the original was stiff enough to hold it's own weight when held horizontal.

Cleaning and oiling the starter mech made a world of difference.

Enough to do a bgd and still be startable.

Well, the day is done and some progress was made, thanks to all the gurus and information in the forums:
It doesn't always start this easy but I don't need to stand on it with 2 feet and pull with both hands anymore, will probably still switch to an Elestostart cord and handle.

Progress:
BGD brought squish to 54 thou, muffler mod didn't really make it that much louder but it sure does rev nicely.

To do:
air filter needs replacing and I broke the choke handle trying to start it prior to cleaning, aaaaand.....it leaks fuel while running.
You can see the glisten of fuel on the handle, it seems to be coming from what I assume is a vent, but only while running. When it's off you can turn it any which way without issue, as soon as it's running fuel seems to come from a vent in the handle, the area around the carb is dry.

Is this common, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere?

Had a weird thing happen yesterday. Used my 288 all day felling, bucking, limbing and after every fuel fill up it would lean bog bad after running for a few minutes but then clear back up and rip. It has never done that before. Thinking I need to put a kit in the carb, it’s the only thing I didn’t do when I went through the saw a few years ago. Anybody ever had this happen?

Pull the tank and check for a undersized fuel line
That's usually the issue
Check that before tank vent.
You're going to rack yourself starting like that
I hold my saws sideways with the clutch side against my body
And pull with the opposite hand.
220# comp saws and all
Makes it easy for me.

Richen the L side slightly and see if that helps.
