@markds2 @Kiwioilboiler have either of you been to the chainsaw museum in Kamo ?
Just googled it. I know that guy! In fact, true story, he made us a Macrocarpa table and bench set over 20 years ago that we still have to this day. Ima going next week.

So this saw was completely tore down and stripped. Everything was cleaned and anything worn was chucked. Part of the reason it took soo long to do this build was because I have been scrounging clean or NOS parts for the better part of a year as I find deals on them. The only thing I haven't found yet is a nice tank, but I can swap that later if one shows up at my doorstep. Here are a few pics of the process. I painted both case halves and they turn out really good. I used the Husqvarna Aero spray bomb (not cheap).

I took .040" off the base of the Meteor cylinder, and cut a .040" popup on the piston. I ended up with .021" squish and 121/100/77 for timing numbers. I opened up the muffler opening and flipped the stock deflector around to face forward while retaining the screen. You will notice a funny setup for the intake/carb assembly - more on that below.

So I got a Tillotson HS 294 from @jacob j. a long time ago with the idea that since it has the largest venturi of all the HS series carbs, it might be a good fit on a modified 272xp or 288xp. Since it has a larger bore, there isn't room for the internal impulse passage, and thus has an external impulse fitting. So below are some pics of the mods I had to make to get this to work. You will notice the top of the fitting on the carb has been ground at an angle. This is to clear the air filter.

I thought I'd check the comp on my '89 model (300th anniversary edition) 288 last night. Stock saw, with a new OEM piston and no base gasket:

Needless to say its a bear to start! Stock timing numbers (with the gasket) were 106 Ex, 122 Trans, 70 Intake. I guess a very low exhaust makes lots of compression! Original KS jug with no decomp.....nor any provision for one!
