There's so much old stuff back there. You and Joe ought to take a road trip down here sometime and do some browsing.
Taking a day to visit you down there is high on our “must do” list. Wouldn’t even need to browse parts to have a good time. Been too long since we’ve gotten together with you and/or Walt.

Bought out yet another dealer and the pile of NLA/NOS parts has reached the "time to share" level. More than I'll ever use. Going to sprinkle a few here and there and see what happens. Maybe start a separate thread. Thought this one belonged in the 288 thread. Set of 288 cases; NOS and NLA. $225 shipped; (Eastern US.)

It's nearly a month since anyone posted on this thread....

Hoooooray 288!

I built two of these saws while we were in lockdown and they continue to impress me. I have to just start them up and listen to them idle once and a while. The low top is my personal saw the other two hightops are the ones I've just put together.

Gents, my 288 has what I thought were two front facing muffler outlets on the PTO side.

I removed the screwed on one yesterday out of interest and it turns out the rear deflector has no port under it. A quick google image search suggests that the front deflector should fire backwards into the blind rear one.

The front port is about a quarter obscured by a folded flap. Should I remove the remainder?

What about the rear deflector? Is there a way to perhaps slot and louvre some flow to that area or just leave well enough alone?

My saw doesn't need any more power (i know i know..) but if there's easy benefit there, well....

Cheers, Adam.

Hello Adam,

I'm a fellow 288xp owner from Nelson. All I have done is cut that flap right out (its half broken off on yours anyway) and reinstall the front deflector facing backwards (although many do have it facing forwards). I haven't put any other openings in it at all.

That’s the only muffler mod I did on mine as well. Cut out the flap, but I installed the small deflector facing forward.

Gents i've finally made it to the back end of this thread! So much 288 love on here.

Did we end up with a concensus on the AV side of things? I finally went and had a close look at my saw and it's actually wearing a 7th up front and then springs lower rear, spring pto side upper BUT rubber flywheel upper. WTF!

Its definitely floppy, was thinking i'd order parts to make it all steel in the rear, rubber up front?

Cheers, Adam.

There're few setups of av spring/rubber mount combo can be done depending on how you like it, since the tank handle rocks in a L shape. You can put rubber mount on bottom of trigger side and av spring in rest of it to make it balanced with slight play and stiff

They also came with nothing but a bolt that holds it from travelling too far on the mounts up front near the 7th mount at some point, those vibes alot less but had some play

I ordered 0ne spring and two 'hard' rubber from my local Husky shop. I'm trying to make a conscious effort to keep my money in my town while i have some, we'll see if the town's sellers respond tho.......

Any tricks or pitfalls to watch out for seperating handle from crankcase to switch the AV's around? I'll have to fit one upper spring, two front rubber.

Cheers, Adam.
