Is that heat scoring from the clutch?

Don't worry about snappy - 288's are for long bars and big wood, not cants. It either can or it can't.
Yep, At some stage the clutch has come loose and scored the clutch cover. Doesn't look recent though. You are dead right they are awesome in big wood. And that's exactly what mine is used for. That's Australian Eucalyptus that's as heavy and hard as hedge.

With some fresh fuel she fired right up, and runs well, seems louder and more responsive than my 281.
Has a few problems though, 2 stripped threads for the top cover bolts ,broken clutch spider and kill switch wont work.

In the wood I'm cutting, which is extremely hard the 288xp actually feels faster. I wasn't actually that impressed with the 390. I'm just waiting for a new bar and I'll put it up for sale next week.

Agreed, 288 feels like it has more grunt, stronger pull. But man those 390’s wake up with some work.

You guys are lucky, the only saw that I have ever used that could remotely be called 'ported' is my MS660 with a Cross MMWS cylinder, Hyway popup, Maxflow and muffler mod. That being said it sure does haul and normally wears a 36 inch bar (with a HO oiler). Here in NZ shipping would probably kill any purchase from a reputable builder State side and I just don't feel I could justify buying a new saw (I'm just an average firewood hack).

Even shipping just the jug instead of a whole saw?

Bought out yet another dealer and the pile of NLA/NOS parts has reached the "time to share" level. More than I'll ever use. Going to sprinkle a few here and there and see what happens. Maybe start a separate thread. Thought this one belonged in the 288 thread. Set of 288 cases; NOS and NLA. $225 shipped; (Eastern US.)
