Gents i've finally made it to the back end of this thread! So much 288 love on here.

Did we end up with a concensus on the AV side of things? I finally went and had a close look at my saw and it's actually wearing a 7th up front and then springs lower rear, spring pto side upper BUT rubber flywheel upper. WTF!

Its definitely floppy, was thinking i'd order parts to make it all steel in the rear, rubber up front?

Cheers, Adam.
I put rubber everywhere on mine. Personal preference, I like a more rigid saw. Vibes aren’t bad at all in my opinion and I like the feedback it gives in the cut.

I run rubber AV without the front spring mount without any issues.
When I took it off I was like, 'This thing feels like it weighs a pound', and never put it back on.

Having said that ^ unless your carb is set the correct distance from the throttle lever, you can have issues with your throttle when you put a large bar on the saw ...
:(
I still have that mount somewhere. I think I can cut the spring off of it, and just use it as a reinforcing bracket/truss for the under carriage.

Very good point to bring up. I wonder if putting rubber mounts up front would prevent the issue without the spring mount installed.

My saw is entire rubber AV, though it may be a bit tired, but it looked good when I had her apart. Still, I can see it flex when I pick it up with the 32 inch Tsumura on it.
I suspect Husqvarna really added the uh, 7th mount(?) so the poorly designed throttle 'linkage' would work with long bars.
I mean it is the most steam punk set up I have seen that wasn't made of fake patina brass and copper.

The 288 Lite came without the 7th mount, wonder if they had flex issues like you’ve had. A possibility with your saw is that your throttle arm is out of whack from use. They do wear, when I got my 288 project my throttle arm was whooped, even with a new arm I had to put a piece of fuel line on the carb shaft for it to hit the full throttle stop.

I run a 28” bar on mine and have run up to a 36” with no issues. Makes me think your saw might have something tweaked. Could be wrong as I often am...lol!

It's a new arm. Well, NOS. Still, I had to tweak it to work as it is. But with the flex and without the right gasket on the intake manifold, it doesn't reach when the chassis is at full flex. The nose of it hits the arm instead of the cradle. I really don't want to bend it much more. So gonna add the gasket when I can go down to the estate(I am 2 hours away since this Covid thing started), and add the mount and it should be sorted.

I snuck down to the farm a week earlier than they were meant to clear. It's actually super cool here. They were nearly 100% self sufficient during the lock down.
Still, the non pasteurized milk messed my American stomach up purdy good. So no mor eof that stuff!
Igot the 288 running. It's a crazy ass saw with huge power even with the mild port job I did. It still will occasionally have throttle issues, but it looks like it's gonna be an easy fix. The gaskets did most of the work. This thing guzzles fuel, too. But the wood certainly pays for it.
I couldnt find the 7th mount, tho. I am thinking of just making a simple bracket.

Nice work. Those stock numbers sound really good, very similar to my new production KS cylinder. Just needs some widening and a little more intake duration...if you’re into that lol!

Thanks man
They have high compression from factory, numbers are sweet. My final number will be 100,120,78. Comp will get bumped from machine work, hope its still bearable haha. KS cylinder is another version of fine engineering, I got another builder that will get KS cylinder kit and roller pto bearing. Which i call the secret weapon build lol

Very cool secret weapon. Does your cylinder have a decomp? The only weakness on the 288 is it’s small recoil pulley, I’ve broken mine twice. If I had a decomp it wouldn’t have been a problem. And yes I find TDC and pull sharply on the already tensioned rope. Sometimes it fights back and snap, there goes the pulley. Someday I’m going to talk to one of the many talented machinists on here and see if they can make a solid aluminum pulley. It’s the only fix I can see for it.

Thanks, yes mine has a decomp
Even the non decomp will have a boss where you can drill and tap the button. Im sure you guys already know, also you can grind a small groove on top of exhaust port to make starting easier.

I like the custom pulley idea, generally bigger pulley should release more "weight". I'll look into it too, yeah they're hard to pull over even in stock form. Must be the tight chamber size, heard 281 are worse

I was gonna say, I think those stock numbers are what my ported 044 is at.

On my last starter, which was OEM and 35 years old or so, I pulled the actual unit halfway off the saw before I called it quits and added a decomp cylinder. It's a HyWay/meteor/caber kit - which had similar numbers to the KS stock numbers if I recall. I just added some intake, massaged the lowers, and didn't touch the rest. Might have had more exhaust with the stock gasket in, but I left the timing and just widened it a bit on the muffler side. It's a very happy saw that is almost easy to start. 160psi compression before break in. Very easily pulls it's 32 inch Tsumura bar buried in oak.

I’ve heard the same about 281’s. Still have one in a box I’ll get together someday
