image.png Okay guys cruzing CL i see this saw pop up every now and then and laugh at myself as to who would think this is really a 660. But lets for the grins of it lets say someone brought this to a real stihl dealer for a tune up

How would you reply?? And or what the responce would be from the poor guy who thought he got a great deal:

IMOA if a guy is going to buy a saw of that class and size he probably already knows what a real stihl is and looks like.
That cl add has been running for some time now here in minnesota. For a novice user that cuts only campfire wood and brush and a occasional tree. I could see him getting his pride hurt if he took it to a dealer. The add never said it was a Stihl.

They are pushing hard for counterfeit issues right now. The last seminar we had to go to they focused a good 45 minutes on just that. The MS 170 got an update late last year and it was exactly for that reason. They wanted to freshen the look so that the gray market would have to update theirs. Most recent was a bunch of Chinese chain that was marked just like Stihl chain. They are telling dealers that if any saws are being ordered in groups of 8 or more to submit registrations directly to Stihl's legal department. If this saw was to come into the shop we legally have to accept it, do not touch but call the legal department. Sad enough I think they just had to invest some big doll-hairs into that department.

I dealt with this 10 years ago in the guitar business. There are a million Gibson Les Paul copies out there. They targeted the novice market, most played well enough that somebody who had never owned a Gibson was convinced it was a Gibson.

It was our policy to notify the owner before doing any work. Of course most denied they had been scammed and some got downright angry at us for saying their beloved guitar wasn't a real Gibson. We would then direct them to the real Gibson website that had a page setup specifically on how to spot fakes.

Once all that smoke cleared we would agree to do repairs if the client wanted to. Some did, most came and picked up their stuff in an effort to find who they had purchased it from and attempt to get a refund.

I have been told by a friend that travels abroad for his job that in China they manufacture replicas of US brand vehicles. Carbon copies of F-150s except for the badges and such. He told me that the US automakers tried to do something about it but the Chinese essentially told them to gent bent. Looks like the exact same thing happening with these saws. To go to such lengths to make it look as much like the real McCoy does seem a bit fruadulent to me. But where does one draw the line?? We all accept that there are AM parts out there that bolt up and do the job, some of us use those parts.. But a whole saw???? Seems like the manufacturers, importers and sellers of these pieces are dabbling in quite the gray area to me.

I know I would be able to recognize a clone... but how many people are hoodwinked by this?? Think about how many people still get hoodwinked by that prince in Nigeria that "needs you to accept a transfer of his bajillion dollars until he gets here and then he will let you keep 10 million of it".....

Just think:
If the saw had a real recoil, the case halves matched perfectly, even the case gasket looked right, and had "Stihl" where it was supposed to be to the casual observer.

On the "used" market, this would be difficult to spot: until being used, maybe?

You are very correct. The chinese 660's are on almost every section of Craigslist here. Many casual observers do not know. The addition of some OEM cosmetic parts and even some who "claim to know" cannot spot it if they are in a tizzy to have one.

True enough, I hadn't thought of that...

Sounds like a lucrative little scam... Buy a bunch of chinese clone saws for wholesale prices, likely a couple hundred a piece or so.. Slap a few OEM Stihl parts on it for a hundred or so, sell it for triple your money...

Is this going on mainly with the Stihls or are they cloning Husky knock-offs as well?

Lots of huskys too. The ones I've seen were mainly 365's but you can buy every part to build a 272 or a 372 as well, among others
