Ok, so yesterday I had to chance to put the cover on the saw and try the band. It stops the chain, but with the brake on if you give it throttle, it will turn the chain. It will probably work better once the clutch heats up, and expands.

I had the same problem with my 266SE. It came with a non brake clutch cover. I found a brake clutch cover with a broken band. I took it apart and ground off the rivet heads. I used an old recoil starter spring that has the same thickness and width as the original brake band to make a new one. I drilled holes for the dowel and rivets and riveted it to the original metal rod at the top. It works great and was free to make.
