That old piston is still good for a personal work saw. All the knurlings are still visible down to the bottom of the skirt. Hope you didn't toss it.
I still have it and probably would have used it. When I went to order a caber ring it was $14.95 and the meteor piston kit with caber ring, pin bearing, and gaskets was on sale for $28.95.

So does the muffler come in two? I thought it did, but mine didn't. Maybe they were both styles?

I got mine running last week, but would like to still do a mm, and might set squish. It's going to take too much to just take out the gasket, so I'd have to do a coke can or something.

This muffler does not come apart. There was a piece under the deflector that reduced down the opening as well as the "teeth" on the deflector itself. I cut the teeth off and made a cut along the deflector opening with a dremel cutoff wheel. Then I took a long skinny carbide burr and cut the other three sides off through the deflector opening.

Squish was tight on this one too, it took a lot of sanding to only remove a few thousands.

It's a rainy day here, think I might make some tweaks today. Gonna go ahead and add a second exhaust port or make a new deflector and enlarge the factory port. Also gonna try adding some ignition timing. Will be setting up a timing light to record stock timing , gonna shoot for 28-30 total if adjustment is needed.

I'm never happy with a tune for more then a day at a certain temp. I adjust as conditions change.

I guess I should have clarified "fine tuning" , by that I mean messing with ignition timing, muffler, chain, etc. I will agree that I pretty much retune my saws every time I take them out.

So for those of you that are interested, this saw responded really well to opening up another port on the muffler. Factory ignition timing was only 20BTDC, I took out about half the key and ended up just a whisker shy of 30BTDC. No signs of kicking back or popping in the cut. These two last mods really made the saw come to life and act like I expected a modded and ported saw should. The old mans gonna love when we head for the woods tomorrow to cut some firewood.

I will post up a pic tomorrow. Basically I cut a piece of 1" box tubing off at a 45 and put it right in front of the factory port. I saw on old 272 build that scar had done the same way.

Sweet! I planned on doing another port on mine if I can ever get back to my project saws! Can't wait to see the pics!

@PA Dan Here ya go. So I opened up the factory port by cutting out the teeth on the deflector, then taking a long skinny carbide and cutting out the "funnel" underneath. Then this one as I said is a piece of 1" thin wall box tubing cut off at a 45 or so and brazed on.image.jpeg

That's what I did on one of my 262's. On the 272 the muffler was pretty banged up so I replaced it with this one. Wondering how I'm going to add a second port to it.
