261 vs 262 husky deck height answered!

Did a search and didn’t see this covered though I’m sure it has been. I just recently built a 262xp, I had a cylinder I previously machined using my 261 to set .020” squish with no gasket. Short story long when I built my 262 I used that cylinder and realized I had -.010” squish and I made a gasket for the cylinder to get some clearance. So anyone else notice.030” difference between the 261 and 262s? I know some husky’s have been known to have different deck height other than that couple of models, just thought it was worth a discussion.

I recently did a current 3 series cylinder only job that I built on a chassis I had handy at the time and it came in .008" off to the end user.
Seems like this is a poor way to go and might be the last one I do that's not going to go on the chassis is was built on if such is the case.

They only made like 4 of them. Hard to say why they’re off so far.


Most I’ve seen was .020” difference in compression height from oem to a meteor on a 266/72 platform

Not sure but its slapper Without a gasket on the 262 and would not slap on the 261 maybe my maf is off and it’s not quite .030” difference

Likely why you can't buy just a case half from Husqvarna. They know Sven likes to machine more than Olie does on their shifts.

Been out of it for a while, but IIRC, I never had that issue.

I use a depth micrometer and have the measurements written down for most of the Stihls and I believe the Husky 262. Can’t measure reliably on a jug unless band’s already been cut flat. Has never failed for me for hitting squish.

I’ve seen meteor pistons be out .005 in deck height before. The 262XP Meteor piston is one of the few that I found to be better than OEM. It’s a gram lighter also.

Those two saws used the same crankcase throughout the model run. Was also shared with the 257 and 254. (different crank in the 254). Only difference in the family was the early 154 used a different pre-air injection case. Think it was only different on the flywheel side?

Little trick on compression is to use the thinner of the 2 gaskets if your gonna use one at all. Part ending in 01 is the thinner one; 02 is the thicker. Not sure but I think it was 1mm and 2mm thicknesses. There was even a .7 mm gasket used on the earliest 154; but that is long gone unless you stumble on one.
