I did a little research on this damned thing .According to most they say it's a carb problem and they all say it's as fickle as a teenaged prom .queen So I'm going to once again pull the carb and smear red Loctite around the welch plugs in case they are leaking and let it set for a day before I give it another try .I've got the manual on cd plus what Donny Walker said .Low speed out 1.2 turns high 1 turn out .I would not think it could be that fussy but I've been wrong before .I did find out with a functioning rattle ball it should run around 10.5 thousand RPM's .Bypassed probabley at least 12 thou ..

I have not dug into mine yet, I am putting that off to the last since carbs are my weak point...your post is making me nervous about mine....

My 2101 runs like crap with the original carb. I've clean it enough, no good. Swaped a known good 288 carb on it and now it runs great. The 288 carb has the same body just swaping the throttle rod and choke rod.
I don't understand why a block of aluminum with holes would cause this mess. Those tillys are just so simple.

I'm quite befuddled with mine .I did a complete rebuild on the carb including the passages below the welch plugs .I've never had to do that before on any carb .It will fire on a squirt of fuel but die out so it's a fuel delivery problem .It might be a bad seal .Which would explain it .if so .Back to the shed again .
crank seal is my bet

Another thing I've discovered .Evidently Husqvarna unlike Stihl used basically two sizes of seals .Those for smaller sized up to around a 372 and those larger .like 80 cc size up to 3120 .Novel idea ,good for them .Stihl would have had any number of bastard sized seals .
What baffles me is this thing will start and idle but die on a throttle up .Then start right up the next tug .Usually that's too lean on the low side not so on this thing . I'll remember 288 if I have to replace it .I have a box of carbs but no Tilley HS like this one .

I have seen a couple two stroke do that. they would idle all day no rev. one was a mouse nest I had a couple mud daubers and one that was just a carbon plugged screen. something else simple to check.

I blew all the passage out with compressed air ,gave it a soak down with carb cleaner etc .I also just looked up a carb for a 288, danged cheap after market like 20 bucks .If you can even find an OEM carb used they try to get 50 bucks and it will need a rebuild .Like I said I'll give it one more go then off to flea bay .

I think they used the rattle ball to keep those hot shot fallers on the left coast from blowing the saw apart .Simple enough just don't dead stick it limbing .Mine has been defeated for some time ,I doubt if 12 thou will hurt them any way . I have a souped up Stihl 038 mag that cranks a little past 14.5 which is 2,000 RPM past what the OEM setting .I haven't blown it up it even after 15 years .

I mentioned it as a good thing…one less dumb thing to deal with “fixing”

is the fuel line collapsing on throttle-up? I worked on a 070 that did that. Line was too soft and collapsed. Seemed fine on initial inspection.

Did a little work on the muffler this morning. There was a ring of steel above the exhaust port and a perforated baffle under the port. I went in with a double cut burr and cut out both pieces. Now the port opens up to a wide open can. I’m in the process of fitting a deflector high on the clutch side with a second outlet.IMG_8257.jpegIMG_8258.jpeg

About that rattle ball if you can catch vid clips of one intact and one bypassed you can really tell the difference .On the other hand governed 10.5 thou RPM's is most likely right in the power curve and for it's design
of intended usage probably was a good idea . Husky BTW was not the only manufacture to use this method .Fast forward for about 40 years and with advanced electronics probably a limited coil and other means have replaced the rattle ball .However just like the rattle ball sombody will figure out to enhance the saw to gain a little bit more power .
