Actually Stihl can't use Nikasil because they have their cylinders made by four different manufacturers (Mahle, KoblenSchmidt, Gillardoni, Stihl in-house) around the world and only Mahle can use Nikasil, so Stihl has to specify their own plating for all the companies to use for uniformity.

The older Jugs from Mahle will not stand up to the chrome rings either just the modern Nikasil jugs which they produce, you can tell the difference by looking at the plating at an angle and the Nikasil is slightly yellow versus grey or silver.
So are 372xp OE jugs new enough to have nikasil plating?

I’m sure your information is accurate, Dave, but something doesn’t smell right. Any OEM will have their part sources and alternates. That way if one supplier has a delay it won’t hold up production. It also helps to keep prices competitive if the suppliers are vying for contracts. I also understand making some products in house to keep costs to a minimum and hit price targets. But with 4 suppliers things are bound to be all over the place; saying they wanted to have a consistent spec on all their products to keep everything the same doesn’t convince me.

I can’t see why Stihl wouldn’t have a “lower” quality spec on their in house line made for John Q Homeowner, and a high quality spec on a Mahle product line for a commercial product.

I know Stihl has to pay licensing to Husqvarna for the Zenoah patents that power M-tronic. Maybe they were just reluctant to pay royalties to Mahle to use their proprietary Nikasil? At some point it’s about minimizing overhead, not just having consistency across suppliers.

How old is “old nikasil” with grey/silver, compared to “new nikasil” with yellow tint? When did the “new nikasil” start hitting the market?

Most of the three series Huskys and newer have Nikasil.
There isn't an old and new Nikasil, there are jugs that have Nikasil and the rest of the jugs which dont.
Older jugs dont have it and Stihl jugs dont have it and aftermarket jugs dont have it.
Two series Husky jugs may be too old.

I didn’t think these were now chrome rings & safe to run in Stihl cylinders? What’s it cost to get plated to run these? Brett ported a cylinder for me to run this but I’m wondering now
The 660 standard bore runs a Caber ring and is safe for the normal Stihl plating

Ok, someone school me here - Can these be run on work saws? (a day or two a week during fall/winter) Why wouldnt someone want to run these in a work saw? What am i missing here?

The 346XP big bore or pop up is intriguing to me. If a 372 XPW big bore was available, well, id have my eyes on that too LOL. Lets hear it, set me straight.

I don’t see why they can’t be run in a work saw. I personally haven’t seen how the 1mm steel ring holds up with a lot of time on it.
Also, you want to let these forged pistons heat up a bit before you let em eat. Could be fine in a work saw if you are mindful about it
