Next up: Meteor, the working man's standard:

Wow. A 7900 52mm slab side piston is like 67 grams for reference. I know... 2mm smaller, but still. No wonder 660’s buzz the handles pretty good. How’s the lighter piston Dave offers affect the vibes... can you feel the difference sir?

Could a guy use a meteor jug?
Gillardoni does the plating for Meteor and it seems to hold up well to the Chrome faced NPR Japanese rings that Wiseco uses traditionally, I haven't seen a long term test but it looks good so far :)
The Stihl plating from any of the four manufacturers is much softer and is ruined in very short order.

Not to rehash the Dominant discussion again but, the Dominant slugs are made by Wiseco. If there are major issues with them doesn't Wiseco share ownership in that? Especially like the ring land issue that @Deets066 showed in that clip...

I went through hell using a Wiseco set of pistons in a sled before. I still have a sour taste from it but I want to like them, it's just a lot of conflicting feelings.

Any manufacture going to a supplier request their own specs for that batch run. Hope that was crystal clear.
Mistake are made sometimes. Sometimes they are easily corrected. Other times the part is just no good for it's intended purpose.

Edit: that was poorly worded

I only found out about the plating issue after our first batch of Wiseco produced pistons destroyed 4 brand new OEM Stihl test cylinders and then interviewing an engineer from Mahle and the owner of Powerseal about the different types of plating and Mahle's patented Nikasil product. We didn't know ahead of time and neither did Wiseco about the incompatibility. All of the Wiseco production is done at the customers risk, we had to make good on the dead cylinders for our testers and my guess is that Dominant had to make right on whatever their products destroyed as well.

I did the same thing with another custom piston. I never knew Stihl cheaper out and wouldn’t pay Mahle for full nikisil. Just something good enough to get by.

Actually Stihl can't use Nikasil because they have their cylinders made by four different manufacturers (Mahle, KoblenSchmidt, Gillardoni, Stihl in-house) around the world and only Mahle can use Nikasil, so Stihl has to specify their own plating for all the companies to use for uniformity.

The older Jugs from Mahle will not stand up to the chrome rings either just the modern Nikasil jugs which they produce, you can tell the difference by looking at the plating at an angle and the Nikasil is slightly yellow versus grey or silver.

OK I just called and they say later this week they will be ready, fingers crossed, delays are just a matter of course with custom parts, we have been working on these for a Looong time.
I gotta say, it’s awesome you are taking the time and effort to come up with some great saw enthusiast parts for all of us knuckleheads. Thank you!! Now I just need to help make it worth your while, and buy a few :).
