Closed port 268xp was a strong saw, but then again i would say it was peaky in the powerband, not wide and flat like the 038.. my favorite 50mm was the 670 champ jug, it had close to 038 as far as broad torque band goes. These statements are by feel in the wood, not actual dyno graphs!

I could be wrong, but I’ve been told the 272XP was Husky’s interim answer for the introduction of the 044 Stihl before the 372 arrived.

The 044 just beat the heck out of the 266/8 at the time and Husky didn’t want to lose market share.

@Onan18

I still wonder if the dealer pushed my buddy towards the 038 because of the 10mm 044 crank issues. Also wonder why Stihl went to a 10mm pin on the 044 intro.

I like the 038 Mag in the woodyard, its weight does not bother me there, I did molest the mint new OEM cylinder some before putting it back on, all I can compare it to now is my hybrids, it definitely will out pull/cut my 044`s but the lighter 044`s get more run time in the woods, love the feel and handling of them in that environment.

Interesting fun fact, once again im wondering if the bore stroke ratio is optimum. We look at a strong new saw, the ms462.....some bore and stroke as the 038mag. From what i hear the 572xp has a long stroke and small bore and doesnt pull like the ms462. I have never had these two new saws in my mitts, so real world feel i cannot have an accurate opinion.

Look at the 394/5 and 661, both with clobber a 660 in torque and they have a shorter stroke. The rotating assembly and piston have more mass probably is my guess... along with the timing # proven to be unpredictable in the 660?

The 090 is super big bore and short stroke. And it's a proven torque monster. That said, I wonder why husqvarna used that weird bore and stroke combo in the 572?

So because of the bigger bore does that mean power is coming from more port surface area? Kinda like unshrouding valves with a big bore 4 stroke

My Ducati has 106 mm bore x 67.9 mm stroke. Absolute torque monster! But I know... 4 stroke.

FWIW there are proven ratios of bore,stroke,port time area open at certain speeds etc that can pretty much estimate the power output which often times are slightly below the max RPMs .You could Google it if you want .

Further elaboration .The 038's held the exhaust to around 101-102 degrees after which would seemingly produce a degree of torque .I've never been inside an 044 so I don't know about it but might assume it to be a tad higher which ,all things being equal produce a slightly higher rpm with slightly reduced torque .There obviously are more factors this perhaps being just one --or not .
