Well im about fed up with the choke on the 038 filter. I have 3 oem filters and all them have warped housings that dont allow the flap to seal when in the choke position. So then it takes 15 pulls to get her to fire.
I have a velocity stack, but it comes out real close to the tank, so a stack filter wouldnt work. What i need is a stack that has 30 degree tilt built in with 1.75 inch filter base. Does anyone build these, or is there one from another saw that would work.
I dont mind priming the saw so.......15467476106951091864719.jpg

That filter/choke certainly was not one of Stihl's finest moments .It takes me about 10 pulls on a cold start on my modified version but only one usually afterwards .I also have a stock 038 mag that as I recall doesn't take as many and also once started is very dependable .Both Bing carbs .

038 choke design are PITA when it doesnt work. some cheap mod to fix it is to glue a washer or seal on the hole where the flap closes inside the filter. if you look closely the flap moves in a direction that doesnt allow for a proper seal, it leaves a gap on the bottom side. gap is worse when the spring in the choke mechanism gets bad.
that gap is the reason it takes many pull on cold start, ive used rag stuffed in the intake with air filter off in some desperate attempts and they work pretty darn good

Hmmmi just fired up my 038the other day and a bet it took over 10 pulls. I never even thought about the dumb choke in the filter.
But it normally dont take that many pulls.

With the restricted flow of factory filters, the 038 should wake up a bit, not as if it needs it, but just a little boost

They make UNI filters with a 15* bend. It’s often enough to allow it to fit over the Vstack you have and still clear the handle.

You’d only need around .100 of space between the control switch and the Vstack.

What stack would I use for this unifilter?
