So just what is it with the 038 mags, tons of torque bone stock, im talking a wide powerband and usable power. I know the crank is heavy, but the stroke is short which doesnt make sense to me. Does the 38 mag have magic port timing numbers, and everything works in harmony? Ive ran hundredes of different saws and the 38 stands out, in stock form that is. It seems once you get these newer saws off their peak curve they fall on their face. The 575 and 576 huskys were better, but durability suffered with these models.
Will another saw be made with the durability and useability of the ole 38 mag?
Im courious to hear about the ms382 myself, does it cure cancer?

Well I wish all my fellow ope members a merry christmas, cause Im an american and thats what americans do!

I come from a 4 stroke background, I built 377 destrokers....chevy 400 small block and 350 crank, and with any cam you throw at it, the engines liked to rev, but lacked the low end that a 383 stroker build gives you.
The 2 stroke world now things start getting fuzzy, quantum entanglement kind of crazy in my mind.
This test sample 038mag has short stroke and relative big bore, which in my mind would make a high rpm saw, but nooooo, its a torque saw.
So the question here is does port timing and shape make more of a difference than bore to stroke ratio, and then we got dwell to talk about also, as in rod length. How much time the piston spends at tdc and bdc. An off saw that draws my attention is the 254xp with a short rod, interesting saw that one is.

I made a huge mistake. I sold my Stihl 038 Mag about five years ago after I restored it. The original buyer was a man who passed away shortly after I bought it from him. This saw was a beast:

It runs today and the current owner who lives 1500 miles away from me is proud that he owns it. Holding it here is my bar vise that I made in my shop. I use it all the time.

I've never had an 038 Mag in my hands but I've heard nothing but good about them. Maybe someday I'll bump into one.

I like the 038 mag. I got 2 of them. One that i use and one thats in near new condition with very few hours on it.
Both of mine are outlaw saws i beleive they called them. Not made in germany.

I recall when I bought the saw that it ran sporadically. All it needed was a new impulse hose. After replacing that, it ran flawlessly. I wish I still had it in my arsenal. It pulled a 25" bar with ease, but I sold it with the 20" bar as shown above. Some say that it ran just as strong as an MS440.

Not trying to pizz in your Cheerios. The 038 mag is thee most disappointing chainsaw I’ve ever run.
Well, you might look at it this way. The 038 Mag weighs about the same as an MS290 but the 290 blunderbuss delivers about 30% less horsepower. After awhile, you don't know what to think. :rolleye:

038 torque curve is on par with a 576xp. The 576 cuts faster but that huge powerband is what I look at. 038 mag 2 will for a fact out run a ms441 normal carbed version in 28 inch and larger wood.

I love my 038. I raced a built 056 super with it; both saws running 28” Tsumura bars and fresh EXL chains. The 056 beat it by just about a second in 30” pine. We did 3 cuts each, with both saws and didn’t matter who ran which, that 038 was right there with the 056.

A stock 038, ok, maybe a bit anemic. But a mild port, timing bump and muff mod and its a totally different saw.

Change my mind.

I’ve heard there torque monsters, and heavy as...
What was the max rpms on the 038, I thought it was a groaning saw not a screamer. has anyone swapped coils and made them scream abit.

Also while I’m here, anyone got or heard about them Farmtec g388, what rpm do they do and what coil they got. Not that I want one, it’s just for learning and all that

Cheers

Bought it in a box for $100(if I remember right). Very light transfer that cleaned up easy, new Meteor is all it needed. I'm guessing the dealer quoted him astronomical money on a new oem top end so he gave up on it. Told me he just bought a new saw instead. Got a 28" b/c and I made out like a bandit on resale. But I couldn't understand why. Cut a bunch of cookies of varying size. It was heavy as hell and sloppy handling IMO. Yes it had ok torque but cut very slow. Just not my cup of tea.
