Guessing the "pop" on assembly tells you that you should make sure the crank rotates freely because the bearings were getting side loaded. Just a guess
Exactly! Should check anyhow. But it’s telling of how much pressure is being put on the bearings. The crank would turn but stiff. So I took a socket and placed it here while it was still hot.

Since the bearings were loaded, and I knew the pto side dropped in completely, and my case bolts were tight, I knew the case was bowed out a bit on the flywheel side, putting pressure on the balls in the bearing.
So I tapped the socket and checked til the crank spun free. It only took 2 taps.
And this is the end result. And anyone building a case should look for their crank to be free like this.

I agree, and it’s a lot easier to check before putting the seals in. The stiff new seals will make it harder to turn.

Great thread and great pictorial Dan! My favorite saw, and I like how you are giving visuals of the different crank and piston positions with regards to port timings - awesome!

Thanks Chris,
I’m learning as I go, figured I may as well share . These are all my thoughts and hypothesis. They seem to change as I learn more... lol
So anyone feel free to jump in with their own.

Well I for one am thrilled that you are sharing your observations and ideas. You can be sure that everything you're are doing with these saws is being duly noted and I have bookmarked this thread for the day when one of my 262's goes on the bench for some "adjustments".

I am sure that the recipients of these saws are just as thrilled to see what goes into making their saws even more awesomer than they already are!

Not to derail, just a slight distraction, however, it does have something to do with these 262's.

How is the lady we raised the money for doing, Dan?

She is doing pretty good Kyle, she went back to work last month. I do need to make an update to that thread.
