I seen and tried a new method a few weeks ago where the wedge is never in the saw kerf your using to drop the tree. It’s kind of hard to explain so I’ll try and get a picture tomorrow.
Start out with a traditional bore/plunge cut with an open face notch. Then below the back strap place another cut parallel to the hinge. Drive wedge in same cut under the back strap. The lifting action will break the back strap from the holding wood. I looked all day and I couldn’t find a good picture on the internet.

Pretty cool method.
Although it is tough to see a hinge.

Im not referring to the tongue and grove method. And I snapped two hardhead wedges trying that.

Here is what I was trying to describe earlier. The wedge is never in danger of the saw and it doesn’t bottom out on the hinge.

The back strap was too thin and I lost some lift when the saw kerf from the plunge cut closed.

Too much back lean and the cut for the wedge was too low. The wood didn’t separated like it’s supposed to.

I just started using it so, as you can see I’m still learning the fine details. I do like the fact that I’m walking away with an axe in my hand and not a running chainsaw.

When placing the wedges in the same as the plunge cut you can get some sideways push and the saw can clip the wedges when cutting the back strap.
