Chain grinding and filing thread

I initially thought it's a work chain thread, but too many posts go the other direction so I guess it is a race chain thread!?

I only do work chains, but some of them a quite fast.

Me too that's why i asked .I guess it can be both ,may be confusing at times though .

Jim, thanks for starting the thread and the share of info. I am trying your rivet technique and I like it.


Less time with the flex shaft the better. Numbs my hands in about 45 minutes use.

Not sure it does a damn thing for speed but it sure is smooth and slick after. If the chassis does touch wood, it should offer little resistance.

I've seen racers will cut a cookie and then inspect the surface of the cant for smoothness. A work chain leaves a rough rippley cant face where a low drag stoned chain will leave a much smoother cant face. When telling the average fellow about a 'stoned chain' they kinda question what exactly is stoned.

The pix are showing work on the rivet heads. The cutting surfaces are done last, so they don't get buggered up during the other processes. Work in progress.

Oregon loop, rakers are bent outward.
Outer raker surface ground to reduce drag would be my guess.

The outside of the raker controls the side cutter depth. Once the tooth gets taken down so far you'll notice the outside of the raker will prevent it from getting a bite.

I'm always filing my rakers down to get "bite". Maybe I ought to be looking at their sides?

Approximately how far into the tooth does this happen?

The oregon round file chisel cutters I measured have an .025" side depth, with the side of the cutter losing a total of about .020" at the witness mark.
