I’d like to run .404 on my P100. This bar is marked 3/8 with the # of drivers needed. I’ve always had the impression you could run either pitch of the same gage. I may have that confused with hardnose bars as I use quite a few of those.
Can I do it?

I have never heard of the expression, "You can run a bar with a chain that has the wrong pitch as the nose sprocket but the same gauge."

If there is no nose sprocket on the bar tip, "a hardnose bar", then the chain's pitch is irrelevant. Then all you have to do is match up the pitch on the saw's drive sprocket with the chain.

OP, please do not try to run a .4o4 pitch chain loop on a bar that has a 3/8" pitch sprocket nose. That's a mess waiting to happen.

I believe the roller nose Jim is referring to on this bar is an open groove, non sprocket roller. Some older Poulans and Remington's that I'm aware of used this open groove roller. Pitch should be irrelevant as long as gauge is the same.

It is indeed an open groove, non-sprocket roller. I didn’t know enough to call it what it was. I’ll probably give it a try. Thanks.
I switch between pitch on these roller noses frequently. That being said the drivers on .404 are sometimes a little bit longer as in you don't want them dragging in the bar or roller groove.

Can u read? Or use your eyes at all? Serious questions. Cuz your response to the original post would indicate that the answer is no.

I have no idea what you have in mind but that P-100 will run an 8 tooth rim 3/8" with no problem and likely cut as fast as a 7 with .404 .

I can read and average about 20 books a year. But, my eyes have been bad since I was 9 years old. Not blind, but cataracts are now driving me batty. Sorry for the error. I thought this bar nose also had a sprocket, and I must admit it's a bar nose I am totally unfamiliar with. We have had guys here ask a similar question about sprocket nose bars. Regardless, I should have avoided this thread altogether.

Hi Al! I’m just fond of .404. It stays sharper longer for me. I have run the 8 pin on it as well. It screams indeed.

Hey , I appreciate you jumping in. I’m 70 now and I can’t see out of one eye and I’m blind in the other.
You are always welcome to comment on anything I have going on. I’m such a baby when it comes to this stuff and I have much to learn. Like I said , you are always welcome here.

Just for general info normally .404 is .063 but some were .058 and believe it not .050 gauge .Where you would find the later I have no idea ..I was given a nice 32 " 10 series Mac bar with a .404 nose and .050 slot .I changed the nose to 3/8" .I assume the bar was a west coaster to chew through those softer woods .I have a short roll ( 25 feet ) of the very last .404 skip in .058 Baileys ever sold but it does show up on flea bay every so often .BTW the 48" hard nose on the avatar saw is .058 and that old Clydesdale of a saw with an 8 tooth runs full comp like a champ buried in oak .

Okay now the bar thing .If it's a Husky mount bar you could use the bar plates for a 2100 Husqvarna that fit perfect .If it has the Mac SP 1000 plates normally a 10 series Mac bar will fit .However so many people made bars for the 10 series you'd need to bolt it to check the fit .I have both sets of plates as it worked out ..

Al, I have about 15’ of Oregon .404 full comp in .050 if you need some. Don’t ask where I got it. I don’t remember. Lol.
Tomorrow I’m going to put the 8pin back on the p100 and giver a spin before changing out to .404. I think I can find the .058 .404 at the local Husky shop. He’s been there since the 1940’s doing one thing or another and you never know what he’s sitting on until you ask for it. We’ll see.
Let me know on the .050 .404.

The one thing you'll want to be careful of is how tight of a radius that small diameter tip is. If you catch the tip on something with the chain at speed while
running .404" on a radius that small, it will initiate a hard kickback.
