The biggest turd I ever ran is the Stihl ms250. My buddy's Dad got one to clean up storm damage. I know it's only a homeowner saw but it's not exactly cheap. I was thoroughly disgusted at how worthless that saw was. Couldn't even cut 10" Pine without falling flat on it's face.

I ran into problems with a MS251 also. It floods much too easily. Choke pull it twice and it will flood. The dealer billed the original owner $100 after he complained, and it still was not fixed right. This saw rests on my shelf only because the original owner passed away last year and his widow sold it to me.

Do a base gasket delete, DP muff, timing advance the timing, put a HD2 filter on it, and some square chain, that ms170 will be a completely different saw....
Hello! How do you do a base gasket delete and what is a DP muff? Is there a thread on this?
Thank you!

A base gasket delete is done by removing the cylinder and reinstalling without a gasket, sealant used instead. The squish clearance has to be checked to see how much room is left between the piston dome and the squish band, a soft piece of solder is used for this purpose. Generally speaking at least .020" is the minimum clearance you want to have. This works out on a good many saws, if however this is unobtainable a custom made gasket to a tailored thickness can also be fashioned. This will add a bit of compression, intake duration and power stroke, depending on how much the cylinder has been dropped.
DP Muffler is one that has had a second outlet added to it to have "dual ports". The original may or may not be enlarged as well with custom made deflectors installed. This lets the motor "breathe" easier and allow it to make more power. A good breathing air filter on the other end is helpful in this regard.
There's more threads on modifying power saws here than Carter has liver pills. Feel free to look around.

Yes it’s a good saw, but I’m was expecting it to be life transforming after all the Arborist Site discussions.

In that perspective, 10mm slant finnered 044, no way any saw ever made can live up to that amount of hoopla.
