Has to be the flippy caps!

I have both and love both. What it all boils down to is Stihl charges more because people are willing to pay it. Weather it is the name, reputation or reliability. If people would not buy them for what they sell them for they would adjust their prices accordingly.

My $.02

I have all Stihl, but the dealer is 15mins away. Both companies make some really nice saws and both companies make some not so great saws. I preferred the fit finish Of a Stihl over a Husky maybe that drives the cost.

I have both. Both are well built in my opinion. I think it is partly brand loyalty keeping the price up, and partially the ability to say "Made in USA"

This will be a long thread. I really think they (stihl) are riding a wave of brand loyalty and reputation. A John Deere tractor was never a bargain priced tractor, although many farmers thought they were worth the extra money in the long run.

When I took over the farm a few years ago, I was asking another farmer that I was thinking about getting a Deere tractor. He's a lot bigger farmer than me and he said that I'd go bust on service calls and all the parts I'd need. I basically was told the same from my neighbor, both run Deere equipment.

The running joke around here is that IH had to sell itself because after 40 years of beating on 'em, we still can't kill 'em.

How come my camo depends cost more than my pampers?
Actually, most Stihls hold value longer than Huskys and they make parts for them longer.
What would you rather have, an 088 or a 3120?
Ironicly though, I run mostly Huskys.

Yeah, It's kinda like a badge of honor here that you can afford to run Deere stuff.

The distance of the dealer had everything to do with what tractor you had where I grew up. We had two JD's - a 430W and a 2630, a Long 445, and an old Farmall Super A. I now own the Super A, a JD 40, an Oliver Super 55, and two Oliver 550's.

International is very hard to beat. Easy cheap Hp. Use less fuel too. So many 1066-1466 out there running 150-200 hp all stock for years. Try and beat a 856 on fuel... Show me a better series of engines the the DT 360,414,436,466 and parts are everywhere and adorable.

come on guys it is simple history - in early America the farmers and fallers of the land would enjoy a drink at the end of the day and by name association with their moonshine they came to love Stihl (still)
similarly when they heard Husqvarna they thought of the high falutin sewin machines in them big sitty partment stores with the creepy fake people wearing clothes for the wrong season and the bathrooms indoors and all manner of other ungodliness hence hatred of the Husky and love of the Still

Stihl could charge even more money for their OPE if they offered a free Pink Camo JD hat with it.

That being said, I will be the first in line if they offer a spring av 461.

I think there is a disparity in cost because Stihl has developed a reputation for being a premium saw. Not saying it's better than Husqvarna, just that many perceive it to be "top of the line". I think when Husky went into big box stores and became pretty "common", it added to Stihl's air of being "special" ie, only sold by servicing dealers, etc.

All that said, I think that for people that actually use chainsaws a lot it becomes a "Ford/Chevy" thing and people like a brand for different reasons. I've owned (and used) many saws from most brands and have gravitated to Stihls. ie, My line up is all Stihl but I still occasionally have and use a Husqvarna or Poulan model. I don't "hate" any brand of saws except maybe the late model Homelites and Macs which are just junk in my opinion.
