This might be hard to believe but at one in the mid 70's Oregon made 1/4 " in chisel skip for trim saws .Talk about cut fast,my goodness did it pep up those two cubers .Ralph Nader ,bless his heart had it taken off the market .Claimed it was unsafe .

Really the length of the bar is subjective for me, but the full skip works well on the really sappy pine and the trees that run with water ehen cut.
It looks like I popped the lid on a syrup bottle with some pines with the first cut and the full skip has really helped with keeping the chips clear. .404 full comp has also helped alot in the same situation .
Most of the time a 24-28 " bar gets me where I need to be.

So technically speaking a skip chain should cut faster and create less heat than a full comp in large diameter wood?
Not all of the time

It’s going to depend on a number of factors. Including the type and condition of the wood, diameter, how aggressively the cutters and depth gauges are sharpened, etc.

I'll add that it depends on the powerhead used

I was fortunate to have been able to mill some walnut with @drf256 . We needed the 48" mill with a 50" bar, the 36" mill was too small. The saw made the job seem easy, once the mill was on the log and moving forward. It had the power to muscle through that walnut, while milling.

We ran full comp, full chisel, 404, and we found out, after we finished, that we were running an 8 tooth on his ported 3120.

I agree, usually I swap out any 7 pin for 8 rim when going to skip.
Unless it's a 60cc saw or less ,as apposed to if its a McCulloch then it's got the balls to pull full or skip on 8 rim.

I prefer full comp and semi skip. By the time I got around to trying full skip I hated it. Slow for limbing and not as smooth as full comp. I can barely notice a difference between full comp and semi skip though, I'm shocked semi skip isn't more popular.

It is weird that semi isn't more popular, but I've had a hard time finding a roll of it.
Gave a friend of mine a 10-10a McCulloch with a 20" and semi- skip square chisel and he just loves it.

Stihl 33rslhk and oregon 72ck are fairly easy to get here, just not full comp square which makes no sense to me.

I literally order everything now , mostly from guys here. Unless it's homeowners stuff or full comp round file there's nothing around me in South Carolina.

Because it makes little sense to most people. Seems like the chain for guys who can’t make up their minds!

Philbert

Lmfao! :risas3: I think it's for guys who like full comp but on a longer bar don't want full comp. Can't make up their minds? That's like the full skip lazy debate :roto2nuse:

So, you feel that semi-skip offers some of the advantages of full skip chain, but cuts smoother?

This may have been answered before but do you find running the 8 pin gives you a better chance of throwing your chain?

Skip can take just as much power to run as full comp. Most of the time on longer bars full comp is stuffing the rakers with chips and making each cutter less efficient.

See it how you will, this debate will never end.
Best answer.

Semi is for those fellas that just can’t make up their flippin mind. :p
