Too bad you have to buy from eBay, they are a big rip off here with over inflated prices, much better to buy a good saw or a rebuilder in a more private setting. Shipping from either the US or Canada is fairly expensive, but so is buying write offs on your side of the pond.

Here, it is a bit different, saws hold there money even junk saws do., it costs to repair with oem,, as the dealers are allowed to charge what they like for parts. The only thing they are told is how long to charge for a job, their hourly rate is £60/80 hr.

saws get stolen and then sold on as parts on eBay Older saws are brought and sold as spares on eBay .
It goes round and round the supply’s is lower than the demand. Unless your in the right place at the right time.

I’ve been ripped off before by trading outside eBay. But I was very lucky I paid with PayPal and it was not through friends or family, if I did there would have been no come back.

There are peeps tying to avoid PayPal and opting for the bank transfers as there is no come back..
there is a lot more to it than I really see or know about.

So I digress a bit, but this time the seller was very good

I did a timing number check with out the gasket while I looked at the piston, although I did not check the squish at all. As I had no solider.. I will check when I get a new piston..and make a thinner gasket if a have to from a beer can or whatever

I've found Stihl saws in non working condition hold decent value on ebay, more that I thought, but then ebay and paypal take 13% of your sale price and on the shipping.

Time for a pic. I took the pic in poor sunlight.. the best pic I got was the most important side, the exhaust side with the transfer. Remember this saw has consumed that part of the piston skirt.

Is there any mark on the side of the cylinder saying it's anything other than just stihl? Like Mahle or K$?
I'll have the cylinder off my 044 this week. We'll compare. Mine is a 128 serial red lever.

Mahle if I remember. As I put it back on to do the timing. But it will be off again

I don’t know but it’s in the box , I never put it back on when I did the timing,, nor did I measure the squish as I didn’t have any solider to hand I can measure the gasket tomorrow.

One other thing the screws were really tight. Some person over tighten them. I was not expecting shiny torx screws.. let me find the pic.. I will have to investigate one of the threads in the case. I know its a bad pic..

It looks like a helicoil on the cylinder head? Weird? Those torx look like Huztl ones. Pretty sure Stihl ones are natural stainless. Those look like like the ones I used on the 660 Huztl build.

Check the case for a stripped out thread but not a big deal it can be fixed no problem and those torque head bolts are not OEM and I would definitely recommend getting oems and when you do get oems they make two different laneth short and long I use the longer ones less chance of stripping but still need to be careful don't get to grizzly on torquing them down.

I’m no expert... and at the time,,, I was just snapping a few pic's here and there. I thought I did look at the tops of these screws.. iirc farmatec don’t have any markings on the tops of the heads. These do have some markings,, but I have no pics of them . But will get some more of the tops

That stuff in the cylinder hole was mag threadings... it wasnt a lot but it was a bit of thread. Maybe half to 3/4 of a turn. . I was expecting more thou, it was a relief only finding what I did but That’s why I’m expecting to do a heli coil in that thread.
When I put the cylinder back on to do the timing.. I just used the opposite two holes to avoid stripping it out..

I’ve been looking at a ms171 today,, and it was a headache.. I,m not gonna go into all the stuff abut it. But new farmtec top end and it worked for a day now it won’t run..

When I see him next, I need to tell him bathroom silicon is not fuel resistant and should not be used as a gasket..
I never did get it working...
Tomorrow will be more cleaning and looking at the 44. Hopefully lots of pics as well

I took a pic first thing this morn, the screw heads. Not much help in identifying them.. but I doubt there original now.

That bolt looks like an A type - Austenitic - stainless. Is that a '12.9' on there? Usually the rating is more tightly marked. Still, it's showing good color, and no deformity from your wrenching it out, so prolly is good quality. Nice micrometer, btw.

The 044 should have a paper gasket so that saw definitely been apart. With that gasket that saw was definitely not making the power that it did before someone messed with it.

Edited to mark up where piston hitting the crank, because of the excessive wear on the exhaust side. I didn’t notice this till after I posted the pic
