That's another good idea, thanks. Yeah I think that's the only damage but I'll have to look at the saw again to know for sure, it's been over a year since I seen it.

I don't trust heli coils. It seems to work if the right man does it but I don't know who that is. A friend had a heli coiled plug come flying back out on a 462 that was repaired by the best saw mechanic around here.

If you want to post the cylinder and valve to me (not the whole saw) I'll have a go at putting an insert in, at no cost. I have some inserts here, somewhere. If the repair isn't successful you won't be any worse off, except for the postage cost.

I’m good for the same offer. Here’s a Dolmar cylinder I did last night. image.jpgimage.jpg
Trust me.. this isn’t coming out. On the 10mm holes and larger, the heli-coil drill and tap have pilots to keep the bore perpendicular to the top of the cylinder which is very important to the spark plug sealing.
FWIW, every single hole in the cast aluminum engine block on aircraft engines (that’s meant for a bolt) has a heli-coil in it. Every single one. The reason? They don’t wear out and they enable the easy removal of the bolt if it has to come out. Or go back in.
I have old saws (from the 50’s, 60’s that have heli-coils in the spark plug holes. I believe they were made that way. To me, this repair is a no brainer and can be done (carefully) in about 30 minutes.

I couldn’t wait to share my newest, coolest find with you guys. This is a pristine example of the W.German 024AV. W/HEAT! I didn’t really know that they existed, or never even thought about it but, I stumbled on it and bought it. It comes at a good time for me because I’ve started bulking up my Stihl Arctic collection and this fits perfectly. It all works too! Was my lucky day.

Grinding chains that came with two recent saw purchases.

This one is bad, I am half way through fixing it.
Already took the pesky bumpers off the DL's too.

And why this exchange?
It struggles on the mill, I think the extra couple CC's will really put it over the top!

This thing got straight gassed to the point of seizing and I didn't do a good enough job of cleaning the cylinder up, new piston is a little scored. Whole aftermarket engines are super cheap but only come in the 180 piston size that I could find.
