Weekend is over and I am done with my 254's for now, left to do some plastic work on the middle one. I always wanted one 254....
I knew there was a reason why I bought all those 262's, I use those HDA 120 carbs on 254's.
All of them have got new bearings, seals, ring and carb kit, and so on.

From left, 254SG year 97, 1mm thin ring piston, psi 215. (gotta love those neat old 254 jugs)
In the middle, 254 XPG year 91, Mahle jug, later I will work to bring up compression a tad.
To the right, 254 XPG year 01, psi 190.

Since I am done with them, next to finish is my 133SG, and I want to build up 2x262, year 92 and year 95.
I like the middle saw

you prefer them with a bit lower compression?

it's taken me long time Simon, first I thought I should rebuild what I had, on the road I got 3 others for pretty much nothing.
All in all I have put 410$ in those four 254sg/xpg.
Even nowadays I hope to get more promising 262's, but two of what I have is decent projects.

I like the not so clean look. I'd be afraid to take a air hose to the other saws

I regret letting a client have my 254 xp ! I had worked it over and was a real peach . My thought was that i would replace it with another and make some cash from the sale to fund it plus have some left over. Errrr ...No ! ..254's have now taken off in money so i haven't found the next saw as a project. £250-£350 sterling seems to be around the figure over here for a tidy runner if your lucky.. A right "Nail " makes £150 !! thats if you can even find one . They don't come like this one in my picture often as they tend to have a hard life in Forestry here.Photo0298.jpg

hehe I was just currious if you prefered them with a tad lower compression, but I agree with you, that 91xpg is the one who have gone through a war earlier in life.
None of those are minty saws, and if they was you bet it's not gone take me long time to use them hard.

two beautiful examples Simon.
I think you added it up pretty correct, those 254's I see in Norway have spend a hard life on forrest, I still see them in service in the forrest, it's just seems that they are pure working horses.

Well my ms460 build got dealt a serious kick iView attachment 17004 n the head today.

I think some people have repaired them, and they now make AM ones (ask Dave), so you are luckier than I was when I needed one on my 044 several years back. I think it set me back $160, they are less now.
