Oh and whole carb is as clean as it gets. Everything seems cool in there, and it fired up with another carb from an 029s and did the same thing.

Did you try the 039 carb on the 029S? ie, criss cross them? Did you pressure check the fuel hose? (pull filter out of tank and attach pressure tester and should hold about 10psi (checks line and carb popoff.

I did not pressure check the fuel line. That will be the last thing i do before tearing into it all the way. Would the carb pop-off pressure act the same way with the carb removed from saw and a line connected directly fuel inlet?

Yes,
I check the fuel line for flaws as one of the first checks I do.

Does it just need a set of contacts?
No, they stuck closed and before I could cut power to the compressor the over pressure valve popped off and then I saw a burst of flame and the switch pretty much melted. So I don't think a set of contacts is going to solve the problem. I'll see if the used switch I have works and if not I guess I go shopping...

@Adirondackstihl, still pissing with that ms290 i bought from you. pressure and vacuum tested pretty well (leaked down from 7psi to 5psi after a few minutes, held 7-8 in"vacuum) seems like that should be good enough? swapped carbs and still same symptoms. able to get it to run with H and L screws about 1.5 turns out, but after about 2 seconds full throttle it leans out and screams. even if i turn the H screw out 2.5 turns, it spits and sputters, then leans out and screams again. it does sound pissed though :campeon:

Have you swapped the coil out?
Also, not 100%, but I think I used an AM fuel hose on that saw. It might be collapsing at WOT.
I was testing some AM stuff for Duke.

Sent the saw to a firewood business to test out.
Saw ran great for 15min and then started acting up like it was starving for fuel.
I never did get to do the review for Duke

That 390 is one of the last Phil saws I had

You just got to appreciate when you see saws like this. Owners manual. Extra chain. Towel in the case. They have to be one of the most reliable saws STIHL ever built for the common firewood cutter. Owners says " it ain't running right."

Fixer or keeper? Still pretty cool. Is your Dad's saw going again?
