I was just cleaning up some pine tar off some old saws. I first tried this citrus cleaner, then simple green... neither worked too well.

I then tried Goof Off and that took care of it right quick! Although it also peeled off the stickers and left the plastic with a slight white haze.

For the guys that clean up the customer saws to be so purty, what do you use?

A real good quality Orange citrus cleaner will take pitch off, but slowly, soaking helps here. The only fast thing I know of is Lacquer Thinner, but CAUTION it will take paint with it if used too much. Test an out of sight area before proceeding on your saw.

Whenever I'm cutting anything that leaves sappy pitch I spray the front of the saw with silicone spray. I also spray all around the inside of the clutch cover and clutch side of saw. This helps a lot and I use Simple Green and Mean Green to clean my saws.

On the bench : all kinds of stuff but i didnt get much really accomplished.
Seven HT carbs through the ultrasonic with new OEM kits today, well kinda...
all made it through 99 minutes in the ultrasonic at 50 degrees C in 50/50 simple green concentrate and water and then 99 mins at 50 in sea foam
I stick the cleaning solution in wide mouth new mason jars because they will fit the big HT barbs and it saves on cleaner.
I kitted three HT-7s and an HT-1, turns out the carb from the MS880 is a WG-72 so i need to get the right kit before reassembly.
The fourth HT-7 is missing the metering lever spring - no wonder it didn't work :) I will track that down later this week.
The last HT carb is on the 394/395 I got from California and it is a chore to get out because of the custom intake, linkage etc.
I had cleaned and kitted it a few weeks abo but left out a gasket during rebuild because i dont do these very often.
I got it all buttoned back up and it fired off of prime in the garage and would idle so I shut it off after about 20-30 seconds.
I installed the bar and a chain I was intending to test for Dallas (two birds with one stone), I stuck on my chaps and set up the phone to record the maiden voyage and then of course the damn thing would only run for as long as the prime lasted (2-3 seconds). No idea what changed, it has new fuel and impulse lines and fuel filter and the tank is full.
I suspect the tank vent but I don't even know where that little phutzer is on a Husky.
Also while I am *b-wording let me say how much outboard clutches and front tensioners SUUUUUUCK!!!
I set the saw on a bench to avoid throwing it.
I grabbed an 084 that was locked up tight when i got it.
I used some of the cocktail @Onan18 recommended and got the cylinder off last week and today I was able to remove the flywheel, clutch, worm gear and get the crank to rotate fully again.
No white rot so I am hopeful this can be a complete salvage operation. The crankcase looks very low hours and the cylinder will barely need any cleaning.

Made space in the garage for Julie car because it is supposed to snow the next couple of days

Set out with all kinds of high hopes only to see them dashed by the Husky-Monster, hopefully she is worth it once the kinks get ironed out.

What cocktail was that @Definitive Dave? 50/50 Acetone and ATF, Kroil, Diesel and ATF? I have a few I have been known to use based on what I have laying around at that point in time. :goofy:

I can agree with front tension, but I prefer outboard clutch anyday.
Less heat on PTO bearing&seal and chain&bar a tad closer to powerhead is good things in my book :D

50/50 acetone and ATF, slowly but surely loosened it all up

All very valid points but I only run a saw for a minute or less so I want to be able to swap out bars and chains quickly.
Outboard is just awkward and harder to see if the fun size race sprockets are lined up right etc.
For long days of cutting I could see the better balance being less fatiguing and longevity is great but i doubt i will ever wear out a saw again :)

Good and bad things, great crank and hopefeully workable PTO bearing.
Some bad news lol:
Alot of carbon in exhaust port.....

When they swap fuel from pump fuel to alcylate fuel, this is what normally happen.....

Seems there will be a bit work on the carb as well....
