Was just about ready to put on the air filter, then I sent a guy that I know some of the porting pictures. Lucky for me, I saw that I had forgotten to bevel the ports.

Now I'm tearing it down again, but at least I didn't hang a ring running herIMG_4175.JPG

Picked up this straight gassed red lever 026 today. If I had to guess I'd say it was probably the second tank ever to be put through her. Barely a scratch on it.

image.jpeg image.jpeg Scored piston and low compression in my 394xp, previous owner/idiot ran it with rich tune or bad oil/mix and carboned up exhaust port which fell into rings on exhaust side. Cylinder cleaned up easy with 320 grit and wet/dry sanding. Dull screwdriver cleaned up exhaust port. New 38.00 meteor and she's back to work. Compression is already way better than before. Set her 500 rpm fat for break in. Hardest part was cleaning saw, suprising how dirty it was under covers despite it being a low hour saw.image.jpeg

So, I finished working on the last saw I'm doing before Tax Season starts, and returned it to the tree guy. It was an MS 460 with a sheared crank key, and today I yanked the carb limiters and drilled some holes in the muff cover.

When I returned it, I asked the owner "how do you like my saw mods". He replied " The guys are running them right now, and they love them. They are much stronger, and the throttle response is better, the guys really like your saws".

I've worked on 3 - MS460s, 3 - MS461s, and an 066.

Considering I just did tune ups, muff mods and removed the carb limiters, it made me feel good!

Oh yea, then he said "After your busy tax season, I have a whole trailer load more of them at my home I want you to look at" I think I'm going to be busy this year!

Why were saws taken out of service???

This is the first year I have worked on saws for pro tree guys (actually just the last few months), so I figured it would be interesting to know why they take a saw out of service. Several of the saws had multiple issues, but this is my best guess as to what took them out of service:

I received a total of 19 saws, including 2 - 201Ts, 8 - MS 460s, 5 - MS 461s, and 4 - 066/MS 660s.

- 2 of the MS 461s were still in service, and just had broken bolts that needed fixing. (a total of 6 saws had broken bolts)
- 1 MS 460 was crushed beyond repair (tank, case & other parts broken) and was used for parts.
- 3 saws had clutch issues, both 201Ts had bad clutch drums, and a MS 460 had a physically broken clutch and melted plastic on the shaft that looked like bakalite and was very hard to remove.
- 2 saws needed pistons due to heat failure (a MS 461 and a MS 660) (cylinders cleaned with Randy's method).
- 2 MS 460s had broken recoils (several others were missing recoils, but had other problems).
- 2 saws had bad carbs (a MS 460 and a MS 660).
- 3 saws just needed a good tune up (plug, air filter, fuel filter). (2 MS 460s and 1 MS 461)
- 1 MS 461 needed a coil
- 1 MS 460 had a sheared flywheel key
- 1 066 had a bent top handle and needed a tune up.
- 1 066 had a broken oil cap and needed a tune up.

As you can see from the array of problems I encountered, the information I have learned on this site (and another) over the past few years has been invaluable in both the diagnosis and repair end of things. Every saw, except the crushed one (and we used parts from that saw in several of the others) is now running.

Was handed this old girl today and asked to check it out to see if it was a runner but not to spend any time working on it.

Lovely old Molbilco Echo 601

Sprayed it all with degreaser and hit it with a hose and it came up great.
Cleaned up the rusty bar and chain, put a screen on the muffler which is all rusted out and filled the fuel and oil tanks.

3 pulls and off she went.

Throttle holds the carb open a bit
Oil pump won't pump oil
Muffler rotted out and leaking in a couple spots.
Fuel cap leaks.

Other than that it's like new.

I am going to ask the owner if he will sell it to me.
I think it would go great ported with a v stack and small pod filter on one side and a pipe or one of those short Mccalloch style mufflers on the other.
It sounds great :-)

You're lucky I've got low rent tree service guys around here i normally only get clamshell stihls 170 180 290 291 390 lol they did bring in a few 361 and 046s a couple of them are trying echos now they had some promotion going on for company's i see their point to buy low cost saws.

Got a quick piece of advice I learned on the 394xp, the saw ran suprisingly well for slightly scored piston until I found that out by checking later, but when it got hot after cutting for a hour or so it would not restart after you shut it off. I would pull the plug and see that it was wet with gas flooded.. Dried it off and it would restart sometimes, sometimes not. Rebuilt carb. Same issue. Weird how it would start up in 3 pulls cold just fine. Did a bit of research and found the coils on these saws go bad every so often due to being under the hot muffler. Got a good used oem coil 29$. Issue was resolved completely, and the saw ran much better. The old coil was packed around with sawdust and crap from previous owners lack of maintenance as well as being cracked/melted in one spot.

Cool old saws, I've worked on several. Most of the time the air filter cover is on wrong. Don't know how people fug it up but I've seen it a lot.
