I don't take the ports to the limit anymore. Rounder corners and more space between the skirt and port edge results in a saw that is a few percentage points slower but many percentage points longer lasting IMHO.

I'm at .019 squish. Likely sand a bit more out. I shoot for 22 these days.

I know this is a very basic question.

But how do you determine how wide to go on an intake / exhaust port?
Max width ROT is 65% bore for a worksaw and 70 race. Of course there are opinions and variations on that Brian.

On most Stihl models I do, the piston skirt is narrower than 65% so there is no getting close to it.

Then you can widen to 1mm from skirt edge where there are no ring pins and like 2.5mm where there are.

The rounder and smaller the port, the easier it is on the rings and piston skirts.

Piston design plays a role too. As in full circle vs. windowed, etc...

Again, some people will not agree with above, but it's what I do.

Thanks Al
I'm going to try laying them out today.

Good thing you caught it. I've been there taking something apart multiple times and scratching your head. Did you catch it in time?

Yeah. It would run great but the idle was inconsistent. I knew something was up. It only has a couple tanks on it since I ported it. It's my Bil's saw.
