I'm converting a Shindaiwa 577 into a 680, and doing a big muffler guttin'

What's the verdict on using galvanized sheet metal for this small muffler baffle? I figured the toxic crap would burn off relatively quickly, but I'm open to opinions...

Big hole, lol. The later 1-pc mufflers are heavy suckers. The early 3-pc are easier to work with, imo. I see no reason that deflector won’t work fine. It won’t handle much abuse but so what? Just replace it.
I may cut My 1-pc apart, gut and re weld.

I'm not sure if mine is a 1pc or 3, but it didn't feel like a total tank of a muffler... Seemed pretty easy to muffler mod to me! Excited to see that a 680 topend will do... Hopefully run a 24" with authority

The original muffler port had tight louvers, and a front wall, that the exhaust would push into. Akin to screaming into the mirror from 4in away.

The 3-pc is basically an early 80s husky 61 or 266se design. Two halves of a can with a baffle plate in between. You pictured the braised 1-pc. Only way to gut those is cut them apart and weld back together.
Yea, those deflectors are nuts :p. 288s had that style

Top end for the 680 and 695 are the same so you could call it a 577/695 😁

It's a pretty solid jump in cc's! Although I just did a Makita 6421>7901, so that might have the HP increase victory.

Wondering what the squish will work out to on the 695 conversion. Since OEM pistons are unavailable, I picked up a LRB piston. Understanding their reputation isn't great, it's the only option.

Shouldn’t change…still way too much. Spec at over .100 😳
Did you try their popup?
Oops, only pop ups are 45 and 51mm

Wow, that's the anthesis of 'squish'... if that's the case, I might send it off to an OPE member that can cut down the base.
Exactly what I may do with a couple

Do you have the shop manuals?
