Yeah the two piston candidates I found for the 680 are either 064 or big bore 372. I'm gonna try one with a BB372 and see how that works.
The only real difference I noticed, is the 064 has a windowed piston, while the 680 is not. Any difference that would make?

I don't think it'll make much difference otherwise if the cylinder is stock. They're a bottom-fed quad-transfer design like the 372 - that's why I was going to try the BB372 piston
and see how it does with velocity at higher RPM. My plan is port the one 680 I have here. I also have one with a two-piece head that I need to figure out a better piston for.

Either I struck gold...or those are bronze flakes from gears.

If I remember right, these horse's need GL-5 rated gear oil and straight 140 weight. I think I may have the shop manual somewhere.

It was empty when I got it I think. I only put a quart of 85w140 to start. Then ran it. It locked. Sat overnight. No longer locked. Smooth now. Added some cheap 5w30 and ran it around a bit. Still smooth. Flushed with diesel which is where u see the flakes. Now it has 3.5 qt 85w140 in it. Its gonna get 1.5 hours use per year at my place. Hardly any rocks or impediments at this point in the garden. Should last forever.

Glad to here it’s okay Matt! I have one given to me by my dad that needs those gears replaced, but I just haven’t had time to fool with it.

could be coil, also...
check valve adjustment.
check muffler make sure not clogged up.
the 4 mix engine is bad to carbon up when not used at full throttle. little sea foam throttle body cleaner will help, 3 sprays at full throttle to it almost dies and then one good spray till engine shuts off, let it set for about
10 mins and then hold at full throttle, seeing fireworks coming out of muffler is normal lol .
check for cam lobe wear .
check came lode and rocker guide holes for wear seen a many wore out .
check for valve guide wear
i think the shaft tune is wore out
does the trimmer have the guard on it?

feeler gauges going out monday. ill send a good used coil too

Checked valves, ok
Muffler isn't carboned up
Confirmed faulty coil this morning. Ran same way as last night with stop switch wires disconnected. Good spark at dead idle but as rpm increases spark becomes erratic. Seems like stuck at idle timing or rev limiter portion of module faulty and engaging rev limiter too early. Started on second pull this morning.
No guard on it, machine is used commercially, I know it's not good to run without guard but that's his choice. I did have it running okay last night. I'm 99 percent sure that the coil will solve the issue. Once coil is on I will load test in the yard.

Freshened up this 440 for a customer, put a new piston in it and adjusted the squish to .021, widened exhausted and take a little did a muffler mod and a dual port muffler cover. Seems to be running good going to take it today and test it with the customer.Put a fresh carb kit 797, so I figured I’d bring a couple friends along! Hopefully get them all tested in some wood, I made the chain a little more aggressive since the last time I cut with the 125/101 so we’ll see how that goes, plus will test out the gem muffler5A2C9C60-2C1A-4CBF-B1B1-66C772678541.jpeg

Fak no. This saw belongs to a local firewood guy.
I’ve been sharpening his chains for a couple years and he finally decided to let me “tweak” his saw a little.
Lol I forgot the smiley face. Does he not have a clue as to what you are capable of building saw wise?

He’s never run a ported saw. His 365 is the biggest saw he’s ever used. Baby steps here. I’ll get him onto something with some real attitude eventually

I could send you a Tecomec closed port cylinder and an intake boot for it. Would spice it up nicely
