I’ve got one that looks similar, but not as bad, on my bench.

The rod has a fair amount of side to side play, and it feels like it has just a touch of up-and-down play

Side to side is normal, up and down, not so much. For $250.00 check it good.

Tried with and without fuel filter, with and without tank vent. Won't even hit . All after cleaning an already clean carb.

Still no fuel getting to the cylinder. Plug completely dry.
I guess Same thing that makes autotune awesome, make it suck.

Did you blow through the fuel line? No cracks in it?

I’d pressure test the fuel line or just swap a new one in.

I had a carb on a 2101xp that was junk. Tried rebuilding and everything. Wasted a lot of time. “New” one fixed it. Sometimes they really are trash.

Try this. Bypass the carb and squirt mix through the plug hole or the through carb with throttle open. Then see if it will fire off.

I did this and it will hit until mix gone from cylinder.
