Black eyed peas and stewed tomatoes for new years, with smoked sausage and brats. Tastes good to to the old crippled bastard. :)

Had a pot of black eyed peas, rice going on in the background...did some bacon-wrapped, boneless, skinless bresseses on the Char-Broil Big Easy. Been raining like a MF'r today so grilled right inside the shop roll up door. We got it done...

IMG_2116.JPG Little snackin' for tomorrow...three and a half boneless, skinless chicken breasts wrapped in bacon. I did two rounds of this to feed the folks and I get three and a half to walk with, put in my own fridge? After I bought it all...I'll take it all day long fellas. Big ol' grin here. And still got some black-eyed peas and rice for tomorrow mornings breakfast.

I ain't too proud...it's gonna get nailed after a couple cups of coffee, early thirty.

Enjoy your night fellas, sleep well.

Agree on the smoked Rib Roast. I started smoking them a couple of years ago. I coat the roast in Kosher salt and coarse cracked black pepper, I give them a heavy smoke, then finish in the oven or on the grill at high temp, to set the crust.
They're great.

What's the significance of Black Eyed Peas and stewed Tomatos on New Years?
I remember my grandmother fixing them but never asked why. I was too busy trying to avoid the Tomatos. I love Black Eyed Peas, stewed Tomatos, not so much.

You got lucky. Did you hide the leftovers?

When we have folks over, any leftovers, at least the good stuff, seems to find their way home with the guests.
A number of years ago, we did a couples shower for some friends who were getting married. Because of the weather, we ended up with about a 50% no show rate. I had six smoked Pork butts left over. After the thing was over, I went to vacuum pack them for the freezer. My wife said a number of people asked for some to take home. She let people take what they wanted. I was left with bones.

When my kids show up, everything goes.

Black eyed peas are good luck for the upcoming year. Always eat'em on New Yrs Day. Other folks may have other things they may eat, it's all good. Always been black eyed peas and big ol' pot of rice around here.

And I'm a likin' that stewed tomato deal Charlie's talking about...luv the maters.

Been there in that situation Steve and done that, a time or ten. I find it it a heap less to clean up and deal with...let'em have it is my theory with the exception of a couple days of leftovers to eat.

As Jason said, It means good luck for the new year. I have done it all my life, And I am almost 60 years old. Jason the stewed maters make the black eyed pea juice so good!! Steve If you ever tried mamas stewed maters I bet you would love them!! ( home canned tomatoes with sugar ) ( good with vodka also )

Charlie, I like mixing a can or two of Hoppin' Jons or pepper & peas with a couple of cans of okra, corn, and tomatoes...makes for some good stuff sitting on top of a big ol' bed of rice.

What's that chit on the ground, cocaine?? It's 77 friggin' degs here, lol. Looking happenin' up there on the grill.
We're in the midst of an ice storm. It started yesterday morning and isn't supposed to be completely past until tomorrow afternoon. It was supposed to be a big deal, massive power outages and disruption of transit, but it's not nearly as bad as predicted. I was going to fire up the grill today and do a couple of steaks but couldn't get to it without busting my ass.
Glad to hear you guys are warm.

...about an hour and 15 mins in...hit it with some applewood chips to start, just kicking back about 225 degs, just pumped 'em down with white distilled vinegar/apple juice/water mix...mop the yard bird with the Blues Hog Tennessee Red Sauce in a couple of hours.
