What oil is best? and what ratio?

I use 2 stroke oil in all my small like 5hp motors. Seems to help my carburetors. Been doing it awhile. Rarely have issues with carb nonsense. Could just be the stabilizers in it?? I don’t know. I decided it was a good idea to try

I do too, in my snowblower and lawn more, etc. I think the stabilizers help, and the detergents in the oil help keep the engine clean (pure speculation, as I haven’t needed to tear one down).

I owned and operated a fishing lodge at one time and we ran every engine on mixed gas, Including several GM trucks, kawasaki mules, Yam rhinos, etc. On the 4 strokes the plugs needed to be changed yearly when we changed oil and it for sure dirtied up the internal parts. But never had any issues with any of it.

is there a 2-stroke oil that would do a really good job of cleaning carbon from vavles and pistons in a 4-stroke engine? at any mix ratio maybe 100:1 or leaner?

There used to be an OPE shop in town that used Opti-2 for their 2 strokes. They also used it in all of their 4 strokes. They sent everything out with Opti-2 in the gas; all 2-stroke and all 4-stroke equipment. Not sure if there was a technical reason, or if it prevented an employee from straight gassing a 2-stroke; but it definitely didn't harm the 4-stroke stuff

Opti-2 is mixed at 70:1 so there is that to consider.

FWIW we did it to prevent straight gassing.

Today when I was draining saws for shipping, I had something retarded on my mind and emptied 3/4 tank of bar oil into my 2 stroke mix can on top of 1.5 gallons of gas. So yep, my Ranger got half of it and the lawnmower got half of it. So I’m in the club now too, only mine’s got about 10:1 Poulan Pro bar oil and 32:1 Dominator in it lol.

Ought to smell just fecking dandy plowing the drive the next few times

20 years ago, for summer storage the snowmobile dealer here in town recommended filling the gas tank up right to the top with fuel and dumping a quart of old-school non-synthetic two-stroke oil in it and running it until it got into the internals. Never had carburetor problems with the coating of dino oil
