I wouldn't say I'm a great saw mechanic either..but I know for a FACT that 50:1 doesn't kill chainsaws like some people say it does.
One of the large tree services I do work for runs Stihl 50to1 in their big Stihls and they hammer the crap out of them. Internally they all look good and just keep running. They require rings, bearings, etc. From time to time but they use their equipment and dont baby them

Yes, yes, yes. So very true. No substitute for good saw maintenance. [emoji106]
It goes a long way. Add them all up and you generally get good performance and longevity from your equipment.

There really isn't a "magic oil" that we all strive to find. Lol

In my business if a chainsaw makes it 2 years it's a victory. Motorcycle oil at 32:1 makes no sense for someone like me in a chainsaw.

To each their own.

You get more longevity from the Mtronic saws Ryan? Or traditional carb saws?

I think most times on here when someone says 50:1 killed a chainsaw they left out that the chain was dull as elephant balls, the fuel was garbage and the saw hadn't ever had a clean filter put on it so naturally it was running crazy hot.

Does a muffler mod letting a saw breathe better help the bottom end get the lube it needs being it's not getting as hot ? Idk...

They both get dropped and ran over the same..I couldn't tell you honestly..I'd assume m-tronic would considering it's always where it needs to be as far as the tune goes.

Cool. Your right though. 50:1 tuned properly will not kill a saw.
I think a muff mod just helps it run a bit cooler. After being retuned of course.
In your line of work, the saws get beat up for sure.

The saws would require much more work to test. Also about triple the RPMs. Just plain too much work.
Weedeaters are fine. [emoji106]

YES... So true. We're all in search of this magic oil. But in fact many oils will do the same thing.
50:1, properly tuned, with all good preventative maintenance done and good chain will serve you well for many many years.

With that said, these tests are still cool. Cool to see just what happens to both Weedeater and oil at these diminished ratios...[emoji106]

Would 50:1 have killed them if the muffler was breathing and they had a good tune ? Idk ?

That’s hard to say. With the lower limited coil tuning is tricky or it’s pig rich under the lower limit. I don’t trust that little bit of oil in those big saws myself but some people do and have good luck. A crank rebuild on one of those is more than a 261 so I’d rather add more oil.

Makes sense.

Looking at the price I paid for my most recent liter of 2T oil, motul 710, it comes to 58 cents per ounce. So going from 50:1 to 32:1, 1.4 more ounces of oil, that's an increase of 81 cents per gallon. Cheap cost for more oil and protection.
